I saw a post by BIDLIMIT about a nut with a zerk fitting for lubing a tilt tube easily. Has anyone tried this lube nut? How do you install it? How well does it work? Many marine outlets do have it in stock. Please advise.

If your talking about this.
Steering Guards

I think they are a must have for salt water apps.
They keep the cable free and lube'd.
I've ran one for the past 10yrs and have only had to replace the steering box and not the cable.
They are a snap to install.

Yup, that's the one. Thanks for the response. How do you install it? Would you have to drill a hole in the tilt tube so the lubricant would reach INSIDE the tube?

That thing is a must. I replaced the entire steering system on my motor and within a year the new one was giving trouble. I put the nut on and have not had a minutes touble since. The moving parts on the steering cable is on the starboard side and what most people dont realize is if you lube the visible side (port) of the steering cable you are doing very little if anything to help your cable.

Nope,
Just undo the linkage from the motor to the steering shaft.
Then remove the nut on the end of the tube.
Slide it off the shaft.
And replace the new nut in the same order.
You may want to lube the steering shaft to keep from damaging the o-ring on the new fitting.
Only tools you'll,
1-Cresent wrench
1-grease gun
1-pack of six beers. :D

Thanks a bunch for the help. The lube nut is on order, the tools are in the garage, the wife is out earning gas money (I am retired), the Gulf is only ten minutes away, and the cold beer is in the frig. What more could a guy ask for??? :D :D :D
