Hello,
I have done a lot of reading on replacing impellers on this forum and havent seen any suggest that you grease the impeller or housing that it goes into ? Is this necessary when you are putting the impellor in ? Also I have a mercury 65hp 4cyl and the new impellers fins stick straight out.... does it matter which way they curve then ?

thanks for any help.

Re: greasing an impeller ?

you can put on a little grease just to help get the upper housing down onto the impeller. what you want to do is to turn the driveshaft clockwise while pushing the housing down over the impeller....this will get the blades curved in the correct direction

'Mornin' Kid,

My neighbor is a Bomb(omc)/Merc dealer.
He suggests (and does this himself as well), lubing the impeller/housing with 2-stroke oil. I mentioned that i have a concern with petro products and rubber but he assured me that the rubber of the impeller is made of stuff that wount deteriorate from the oil.

Good Luck
Have FUN!

Just a thought the pump needs to be inserted in the direction of rotation of the engine. I don't know are all engines rotating clockwise?

Hiya,

I was told to lube the pump/impeller when putting it together, so the impeller doesn't melt the first time you start it (new rubber + clean housing = lots of friction). I put a small glob of light weight white grease in there.

Brent

Just spread a little dishwashing soap on the impeller housing insides and put the impeller in while turning in a clockwise direction.

agree with dishsoap... will automatically go in
the right direction first time you turn it over.

Yep, dishsoap is all you need. In operation the impellor is water lubed.

This may sound funny but if you wanted to lube the impeller with something that wont hurt the lake/river then try KY jelly. Its water based and will wash out asap without holding any dirt.
I've seen it used in the hospital for a number of things wheels, doors.

PS. I'm a Med student not a perv...lol....

KY can be used for lots of things, it just suffers from a reputation perpetuated by high school boys and teenage camp movies.

according to the manual, there is a correct way to place the impeller and recommended lube. i'd follow that. but i have also heard the dish soap from mechanics.

What about spray silicone? Seems pretty harmless/easy on rubber material

p.s. - kid you wouldn't happen to know any Whitehairs in Salina?

Nope, don't know any Whitehairs in Salina, just moved down here about a year ago ....so not too familiar.

I just used some 2 cycle engine oil to put it on.... turned it clockwise and went in ...

Thanks for all the help.

rickdb1boat nails it. Dishsoap is the best I've used. I think KY would dry out quickly...atleast it does on the ole lady! :D

If your wife finds the KY in the garage, she might think you love your motor/boat a little too much . . . .
