Greasing/Lubing the control box?

Does anyone know what kind of grease is in the shift/throttle contol box on older (pre 60's) out boards? I have taken mine apart to inspect and cleaned it up, now I am going to reassemble it. Do they need grease in there or is that just someone being over cautious?

Thanks.

Re: Greasing/Lubing the control box?

It probably had white Type A grease in it, right? That stuff is obsolete, use Triple Guard Anti Corrosion Lube, or equivalent. Does your control have round ball knobs? They need all the help they can get with lube, especially where the white plastic rack gears slide. Any of them need lube where stuff pivots, like the handles.
