Hello, I have a 5.7L with a 280vp. I have just about finished my boat. I have replaced the intermediate shaft bearings. I need to now load my bearings with grease, and I was trying to find out how much grease do I need to put in with the grease gun, and how will I know that I have enough? I am afraid of loading to much and I have heard thats not good. Thanks

Is this information correct? 3 - 4 pumps only with the engine at idle! Got this from another site.

Did you fill the entire cavity full of grease before installing the seals? Did you pack the bearings before install? At what point are you with the install? Is engine and flywheel cover back in the boat?

Yep Cap, I got the engine and cover back in the boat. When I installed the bearings, I only lubed them with grease real good, but did not load any grease in the cavity itself, only mashed grease into the bearings by hand. It is really completely empty. Thanks Cap.

Sorry I'm not sure how I would grease it.

Its tricky since you don't want to blow out your front seal. I think I filled until I saw grease pushing through the rear bearings. It would take a lot of grease to fill the cavity.

Maybe one of the pros will answer with the "correct" procedure.

Did i mess up Cap? So running it at idle and pumping 3 or 4 pumps wont be enough? Does the cavity have to be filed all the way?

Re: Greasing Shaft Bearings?

This is the last piece of my puzzle. Is there anyone that can help me out with this? I was told to pump the grease in until i feel the pump get harder to pump, then stop. Start the engine and run at idle speed, and add 3 to 4 more pumps of grease. Can anyone confirm this.

Don posted the instructions not too long ago. Here's the thread with a link to the factory instructions:

The Captain is right about the correct way to do it. Not sure about what the pros would do if the cavity isn't filled but I believe the Captain is right in that regard as well. What I would do at this point (not a pro - just my opinion), is:
remove the rear seal, run the engine at idle and then have someone watch the rear bearing as you pump in grease. Once you see new grease coming through the cage, it seems safe to assume that you have the cavity filled and that fresh grease is getting to the bearings.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, But by the time that I noticed a reply, I took my chances and did the above. You have a good idea, but that would still leave the engine side seal. Hopefully everything will turn out fine, as I did install some grease by hand into the bearings. I pumped a good amount inside a will finish up with the engine at idle. Thanks

Re: Greasing Shaft Bearings?

If the upper gear box is still removed, or next time you have it off, you may still be able to see grease coming through the rear bearings using a flashlight. Since you are pushing grease though both the bearings, it shouldn't pop the front seal before pushing through the rear bearing. If that makes any sense. Once you know the cavity is full, you can go to the 3 pumps a year while idling method.

Glad to hear you've about got it Done!!!:D

Thanks, one more thing Cap. When refilling the power steering, I use ATF and not power steering fluid correct? The fluid inside now seems to be reddish like ATF. Searched online, but just want to make sure. Once again, Thanks.

Re: Greasing Shaft Bearings?

I looked at a couple OEM manuals and found nothing. the Seloc manual says type F, ATF.
