Okay, if you've followed my "updates" on re-powering my '74 Grady White Chesapeake with a new longblock...

Took it to a buddy from another forum yesterday morning and he checked my valves, (good), rotated my distributor 180deg., told me to turn it over and I got to hear the most beautiful rumble of my new 6 cylinders firing away. We tuned the carb (Holley 4bbl), perfected the timing, ran it at 1800rpm for 30 min. while the motor held steady oil pressure at 40. What a beautiful day! Now, for the water test...

Took it to Lake Lanier yesterday evening and had her up to 3000rpm, (about 27mph) and she ran like a top!

My wife and I slept in the boat on the lake, woke up and ran around for most of the day today.

WHAT A GREAT TWO DAYS!!!

(I just had to share my joy).

As soon as the warranty is up on this long block, I'm installing the crane roller-rockers I used to have on my old motor, but for now, stock is good!

We both (my wife and I), love our boat, but we had forgotten how much in only 3 months being without.

Needless to say, we are VERY exicited about the prospect of GROUPER DIGGING this spring/summer and fall!

Got a sunburn today to boot!

The old 180 out of phase deal. It happens.

You probably shouldn't be taking it up to 3000 for any length of time for the next 10 hours. I've always read that 2500 should be about it for the first 10.

Glad you have a happy ending.

You do need to run it up and make sure it is propped properly. If you are over propped, you would be overworking the engine at all rpms, and that's not good.
If the WOT rpm is where it should be, the big thing is to not keep the same rpm for more than 10 ro 15 minutes, just vary the rpm. You also don't want to lug the engine by being ALMOST on plane, that is worse that running WOT. Get on plane and vary the trottle for the first 20 hours and you should be fine.
