green oil in bilge and bellows, but...

I had green drive oil in the bilge, and removed the outdrive and the u-joint bellows were full of green drive oil too. Expecting the worst, I took the outdrive to the dealer for yoke and seal replacement. However, they just called and said they did a pressure test on the outdrive and it is fine.

So... where is the drive oil coming from? There was no indication of oil at the oil connection/seal on the outdrive gasket.

I am stumped..... any ideas?

untill it blows from a "rotating leak".
Id replace them just as a precaution cause its the only place gear oil could come from.

I agree.
There is only one way for gear lube to get in the bellows. That is from that seal. During a shop pressure check, the drive is not hot nor spinning at engine rpm.
Replace the seal at least even if it looks good.
If there is a groove in the yoke where the seal rides, replace the yoke also.

My drive blew from the upperseal. It still held pressure and vac!

Update:

You guys (and I) were right... the shop took the outdrive off the stand and set it down on the shop floor resting at an angle. It then leaked gear oil all over the floor overnight.

New yoke and seal are going in.
