Greenhorn question on ’77 Johnson 175 – does it have a pee hole?

Just received a used in good condition '77 Glastron fish and ski with a Johnson 175hp (Mod: 175TXL775) on it. I'm going through the engine and can't locate any indicator for the cooling system working properly - pee hole. Does it have this? If not – suggestions? Recommendations for a good shop manual for this model? Any specific Do's and Don'ts for this engine? Recommendations for easy starting routine would be great. Thanks for any and all help.

OMC began installing the telltale in the 1979 V6 models. You can tap a hole for the nipple in the outer exhaust cover. I would suggest you contact the Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee for an exact copy of the original manuals. If you don't know it's history, I would replace the thermostats, water pump impeller and check the pressure relief valves. Also, a compression check will let you know the more about the condition of the pistons and rings. The engine has two temp switches (one in each head) which will send a signal to the warning horn in the control box. You need to test these for proper operation. Make sure the choke solenoid closes the choke butterflys and it should start fine. FYI, the last digit of the serial number is an "S".
