Greetings from France

Hi to all iboat'ers.
I'm a newbie on this forum so let me introduce myself. Myself and my missus are Irish and have been boating in Ireland mainly on the River Shannon and the River Barrow since the early 1990's. In the last few years we got a bit restless and this period of restlessness was followed by a rush of blood to the head. And we forgot to stop when we reached Limerick on the Shannon and headed off on a voyage that took us to France. Thing is our boat was only designed for river cruising and not the sea and also we never had been to sea before. Still here we are now in France.

The boating here is completely different to the sort of coastal stuff you guys do over there on the other side of the pond. So you may find my story's interesting or on the other hand you may not, if you don't there is nothing lost.

Yesterday we were in Paris and we sailed past the Eiffel Tower, what a trip that was. I have some video of it and I will link it later.

Wow, that's very cool! How did you get to France? across the English Channel? I took a tour cruise on the Seine and have some pictures of those funny looking, narrow, elongated boats moored on the river.

Cork ah? they call it the rebel county. It's where my parents come from, I myself was born in Dublin but I was made in Cork

I'm not much good at sticking pick in so hope this thumbnail works... This is a pic I took on Sunday. On your side of the pond it should raise an eyebrow or two.

Gonefishie, We had a few hundred miles of sea to cover before we reached the English Channel, the Atlantic west coast of Ireland then we had to cross the Celtic sea before we reached England. In all it took us about 10 weeks waiting on weather.

It's a small world you know... my better half (Marion) is from Limerick, Pennywell in the city to be exact. It's a great city and it has really come on in the last few years.

I have loads of pics and video and more on my blog site (link in my signature) if you are bone idle some day and close to suicide it might just stretch out your life a few hours.

Not sure of the exact location her family is from. Her maiden name is Durkin. She's 3rd generation yank. We were suppose to go over next year but she got preggo so the trips on hold.

Great pictures!!. My grandmother(Ellen Mckay) was from Donegal county(Milford) and my wife's relatives(Cosgrove) are also from Cork county. We visted Ireland in 2002 and may go again this September. You have a beautiful country,over there!.

The timelapse vid of floating on the Seine has to be one of the neatest things I've seen in a while Thanks for sharing.

See there you are...work interfering with decent boaty stuff again.We went one of those 'Off the shelf' Irish bars they have in Paris the other night. They are really great but not for a full ten minutes. I tried a Guinness and I had to chew it before I swallowed, but my stomach is all right again now and I have stopped taking the imodium

We are leaving Paris and we are on the River Marne which is a tributary of the River Seine. It's beautiful scenery but the weather is mucky. Lots of commercial barges here too and it is "interesting" when you have to share a lock with them
