I am debating the merits of a rail mount BBQ and just using the gas portable that I have on top of a piece of cardboard to catch any drippings. They are about the same size. Anyone have any experience?
If you're going to use your portable gas grill on the boat cardboard to catch the drippings may not be a good idea depending on clearance and how hot the bottom of the grill gets. Or better yet, pick up a universal rail mount and bolt it up to your grill. Below are some from Iboats.
We used the old $25 black suitcase table top style gas grill on our deckboat a few times.
But I find that even a rather light breeze interferes with it's ability to bbq effectively.
I always have to move the grill to a wind protected area to get-r-done.
And there are a lot of those areas to be had on a 21'x8' boat.
So we are in the habit of beaching the boat when we want to bbq and do so on the beach instead. With a folding sheet metal wind screen.

Let us know what you think. I've done the cardboard trick before. Mine has tall enough locking legs and is propane so the bottom doesn't heat up enough for fire concerns.
Bearfan will let ya know what I think of the grill. Weather guessers say it'll be in the mid 70s here in central Florida Thursday so might venture out on the Harris Chain and cook up some burgers.
i had one made, flat panel with fold up sides for wind, drops down on the outside of the toon, rail. i just set my propane grill or camp stove on it. has sides like an old coleman stove.
