Grind while going into forward gear 67 900

Last month we wer out and to make the story short we broke the drive shaft from the powerhead to the lower unit. Then instead of just replacing it we found another lower unit from a merc 1000. <br /><br />So the problem is it will start and run fine it goes into reverse fine and out fine. However it will grind and not go into foward gear, unless you play with the controls ad get it just right. There are times when you go to put in foward gear and cables move, everything move, and nothing happens not even grinding. The control box work fine witht he other lower unit. tonight we tried to adjust the cables. We clean and lubed the control box. But the same problem if you adjust to far neutral become grind foward gear and reverse hit we the throttle cable pics up. We also adjust the other way.<br /><br />while in neurtl there is a slight ticking but ti turns both directions, in reverse the prop it will lock but it has about a 1/3 of turn of play. In forward the prop sometimes locks solid to where it will not the opposite direction but with effort you can pop it and it will spin the wrong way.<br /><br />There was new oil added.<br /><br />Please help fish time is at stake.<br />Joe

that shaft in the lower unit is not set right. u have to play with it.and is idleing set to high. and u might need to adjust cabled
