Grinding in lower unit

I just got a 87 four wins horizon 170. It is in very good condition but I cranked it out of the water the other day before I took it out and when in neutral it was making a grinding noise in the lower unit. So I turned it off went to the back and turned the propeller by hand. Felt smooth. Cranked it up and did the same thing but when I turned it it felt rough.. Also does it when in gear. It also makes a loud popping noise every few minutes. Could it be water pump and a u-joint?

start by checking the level and condition of the drive oil.
