Grinding in reverse

I recently changed my cable for reverse control for my 1986 40 hp Evinrude motor. Now when I try to put into reverse it grinds at the control and engine. When I shift into reverse the cable engages and appears to shift correctly.

Take the cable off at the motor. Manualy shift the motor into reverse. Shift the control box into reverse. See if the cable lines up now, if not adjust it so it does. Then shift control to neutral and spin the prop (make shure the key is off) their should be no clicking noises. If all is good to this pt. shift to forward gear and make<br />shure you have engaugement. If so you should be good to go.<br />...have fun...corm
