Even the slightest bit crooked pulling that shaft and bearing out, and it will bind. Get it straight and it will pull out easily.

Thanks Don. I was afraid a shim was in the way or something.

That makes sense as it seemed to move back easily for that 1" that it did move.

Well, after 4,219 hits with a 5# slide hammer.... It's out!

I think you guys lead me down the path on this one. Do you really think the bearing was bad? I probably could have gotten another year out of it.:D

I noticed I also have some corrosion inside the bell housing (not sure of the term) where the u joint bellows attach on the aft side. Right where my finger is it is corroded enough to make me nervous.

So... Does this mean new bell housing? There is a lip inside that makes it feel like the metal comes out as a piece that can be replaced.

I need to replace the shift shaft seal anyway so I thought I'd ask for opinions before I went shopping.

Thanks

Yep, you're right, put it back in. :p :p :p

You need a new bellhousing as well. It will leak just as bad as the transom sheild would have.

You know how you spell BOAT don't you?

Strangely enough, there doesn't seem to be an abundance of used bell housings on the market. I guess it would be like trying to find some used valve cover gaskets for a Ford Taurus huh? ;)

I'm thinking lighting up the phone lines for a used local one is an option, but if anyone has an idea on how to find one that doesn't cost $400, it would be appreciated!

So, I thought I'd follow up.

It's been a long time since I was on here. New job, no time, blah blah blah.

I decided to take the boat to a mechanic. I got several recommendations and found someone who was well thought of, and did the work for what I thought was very fair.

I had them put the new gimbal bearing in that I supplied, buy and replace the lower shift cable and shift shaft lever. Buy and install a gimbal housing repair kit, and buy and replace my u-joints. $770.

Had the boat out last night and I can say the boat definately had water in the bellows when I bought it. I can't believe how quiet the boat is now!

Thanks everyone for the help. I really had to swallow my pride to take it in. Maybe my next repair (and I bet there will be one) will be easier.

Just remember one thing. Timely preventive maintenance is a LOT cheaper than fixing it when it breaks. You've probably heard it said before as "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"
It really means something on boats.
