Re: grinding starter ??

would be best to get the starter rebuilt by a good shop or get a new one if you keep going you are you really going to hate changeing the ring gear because that starter is going to take it out

tommays

Re: grinding starter ??

You can indeed shim a starter. That was the solution to a problem I had with the starter on my 305 Chevy (Chris Craft). You can buy the shim kits at an auto parts store -- object would be to shim the starter bendix in towards the flywheel so the gear will engage or mesh deeper into the flywheel ring gear.

Re: grinding starter ??

hello
if your flywheel is missing teeth you will have to replace the ring gear which requires the engine to be removed on most applications. next time ya post please ID what engine you have.
good luck and keep posting

Thanks Rodbolt
Its a 180 mer ,there are no missing teeth .I took the starter out and had a new bendix drive put on ,so the starter is good.If i turn the motor and move the flywheel to a different spot she engages fine ,but the motor stops at spot where the flywheel has a few grinded teeth .Thats when i thought about shimming the starter. It worked on my car why not a boat.

Re: grinding starter ??

I had this same problem after I installed a new starter and it just took some tweaking to get it to engage properly. I didn't have to shim anything.

One question, though.. will 2 or 3 hits where it sounds like the worst metal grinding ever do permanent damage? I'm worried the same thing will happen to me as Hulkster.
