Groovy Drive Shaft

No prior experience so must ask: At what point do grooves on the driveshaft become critical?
The pic shows the upper shaft from a '97 90hp.
Arrows indicate worn areas - caused by contact with the seals (impeller hsg + bearing hsg).

In your opinion, do I need to replace this shaft?
If not, then how much more use can I get from it?

Many thanks!

That shaft isn't that groovy:D

If you are concerned about it. A machine shop can flame spray, and clean it up nicely. Then it will be right-on.....:D

Many modern machine shops have "Thermal Metal Spray" systems. The metal spray gun is fueled by OX/ACE and has a selection of tips. A canister of metal particles is attached. A work object, such as a drive shaft is put in a lathe. The worn area is machined to a uniform depth. Then the metal flame spray gun is fired up and the lathe is turned slowly. The part is heated up with the flame sprayer, and when it is time, a trigger is pushed and metal particles are transferred to the area. It is then cooled and sanded or machined. Many different powders are available, depending if you want a hard or soft surface.

Here is a link to what a gun looks like on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/UTP-FLAME-SPRAY...427?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b84f8403
