Ground Anode?

HI

Same 21 Hydrasport I'm trying to get up and running.
(pardon the rate of questions as I try to get a full days worth of projects rolling every other weekend and then the parts ordered and here and call the inlaws and we have a work day on the boat so its weird I guess)

Anyway there was what looked like a brass or bronze screw through the transom. Had a big disc on the outside low on the transom. I had to cut the bolt to get it out when pouring the new transom. It had what appeared to be negative wire leads bolted to it. IE #14 or so wires all black or green.

Is this a backup ground or a good thing. What screw to use to replace it with IF I need to repalce it. Hole is there in the glass so its no big deal to drill it through again if needed.

Thanks, Jeff

[colour=blue]Can you identify the type of material the disc is made from?

Sounds like a bonding system.

Not aluminum. Brass or bronze is my guess. That color anyway IE off gold color.

I would have thought bond also, not sure exactly how a bond vs a ground works in DC voltage. Downriggers for sure were directly connected to this instead of a negative block.

Can see, and was assuming that if a bond, it would have one green wire coming from the negative block going to this instead of a few wires?? And is it anything like AC current where after the first panel past the source, you have to then seperate the bond? IE bond could only happen at the first panel and not really be tied to the second panel if a second one? Suspect DC does not play by those games.

Thanks, Jeff

Sounds like some kind of anode system, but since connected to the downriggers, maybe it's supposed to be some lightning supressor system; kind of like the strips that you see hanging from certain "custom" car bumpers. Trying to transfer a blast from the rigger pole to the water?

Google,,,,, Marine Lightning Protection ,,,,,Lots of great info there about systems like the one that had been installed on your boat.
