I've been offered an '88 Grumman 16' semi-vee with a bad deck. Suzi DT55 that hasn't been run in about 10 years but starts on premix sprayed into the carbs. Around $1100.

Really want to find a Boaton Whaler project boat, but everything I have looked at is waaaaay overpriced.

Anyone have comments?

I donno JB,....... That sounds like Alot of Coins for a Parts Boat...........

It Might be a Good Hull,+ Possibly the motor can be Revived,.......
But,...... That's a Pretty Big MAYBE.......

I'm going to give You the same Advise that Both You,+ I have been giving to Many people,................

Keep Looking,........

There's BaZillions of used boats out there,......
Especially This time of year............ ;)

A Whaler Lover such as Yourself would Never be Happy in a Tin Boat.............

Bondo’s right, that’s allot for that boat with a bad deck. And, if you really want the Whaler, hold off, one will come along. You might as well put your time and money into something you really want.

My Dad and my Grandmother both worked for Grumman in Newark, NJ during the war, Johnson 110.

They built the Avenger (TBF) and were very proud of them. Dad was a magnafluxer and grandma was a welder.

Dunno, JB, but Grumman boats were pretty tough characters ... They didn't come by the nick of "Grumman Ironworks" for nothing :)

If it's only a deck (replaceable) and is watertight, I'd be sorely tempted.

The Suzuki also sounds like only a carb cleaning and float check. Suzy's are also reasonably bullet proof and have among the toughest internals on the market.

The boat is worth about $400 around here (NC coast) and the engine about $500 (maybe even $600), so the $1100 isn't too far off .. for this neck of the woods, of course. If there's a trailer in the deal, I'd suggest offering something in the $900 range and see what happens.

If you don't want it ... I'd be tempted to drive to Tx to get it myself :)

BTW, JB ... I've been considering moving to the NE corner of Texas for a few months now. Although I like the ICW, river and ocean access, they don't have many large mouth bass here and Tx DOES!!!

I've been scouting some of the small towns near the OK/LA/AR border online, but have yet to find anything to rent in the area.

Being retired, I'm in no hurry, but we could well end up being neighbors some day.

Grummans are better than most alum boats...but a Suzuki not run in 10yrs could be big problems. If its a 1988 they are prone to corrode easily in saltwater.

Re: Grumman semi-Vee?

My old DT55 had a bad crankcase seal. When I took it to my mechanic he told me it was a common problem with these motors and that it would be a rediculous cost to fix the thing. I'd be worried about that. It did run, just not under a load. If you can get it going, a 55hp on a 16 ft aluminum would be a rocket. Almost too fast to be comfortable.

Re: Grumman semi-Vee?

I too agree Grumman makes a tough little boat. I was looking for a Grumman about a year ago and could not find one in this area anyplace. So I settled for a Starcraft (still a nice boat though) When I was a little kid my old man used to take me down to the South Jersey Shore to go crabbing. The place we rented from had Grumman aluminum boats with Mariner outboards. Those little boats used to take some real punishment from some real inexperienced boaters! Those Mariner outboards must have been built real well back then. The people that rented them really knew how to abuse them! I would pick it up. Not a Whaler, but would make a nice addition to your collection of tough little boats.
