Re: guess I gotta take the head off again

update.........

I went to Canadian Tire (for you folks south of the border this is a large chain of stores that is kind of a cross between Napa, Wallmart and Snap-on.) I asked the clerk to show me the harmonic balancer pullers to buy one, and he said "why don't you just borrow one?"

turns out they have tool borrowing policy that I didn't know about (I did have to leave my credit card # just incase). They also loaned me the socket I needed to loosen the flywheel nut, so an hour later, I now have the flywheel off. I am afraid to go much farther until I have the book, so I guess I will wait. (auction ends tommorow.)

So while I was trying to loosen the flywheel nut I never had to find a way to keep the flywheel from turning (at first) because my motor would only turn over so far. Amazingly after about 90lbs of pressure something gave in the motor and the top piston came out. I mean it CAME OUT, stuck out beyond the block like 3 inches. I found out where the mystery metal came from htat wrecked my head and pitted the piston. I will do my best to explain this because I am not sure about all the proper names for everything. The Bolts that tighten the clamp around the crankshaft and are attached to the rod came loose. the bearings inside this "clamp" have disintagrated into about 60 peices. I assume that somehow some of this metal got into an exhast port, and then got in front of the piston. It amazes me how this might have happened. Anyone ever hear of this happening before. The top piston is now compleatly out (just came out), but the block is still togeather. anyway, I will let you know what happens next

Sounds like a crankshaft is in your future You will have to have a shop check the block over real good as well. You have thrown a rod sort of  . The "clamp" is the big end of the connecting rod. If this was no longer attached to the crankshaft that would be bad. You are going to have to disassemble the entire motor and check everything twice. Parts can be had for that motor relativily cheap on e-bay. Provided there is not too much damage you can rebuild it and have a great motor once again.

Try to post pics of the damage, there are lots of great tech on this site and will help you every step of the way. You are not alone on this site :D

Well, if it's any consolation, at least the weather's not been that great ;)

You may want to try the Marine Wrecker in Winfield for a different motor (although he's a bit expensive). I picked up a 115hp from Westside Motorcyle and I know he had a couple other motor for sale (but I'm thinking they were in the 35hp range).

PM me and I can dig up their numbers (I off to the guy in Winfield tomorrow looking at a ski pylon).
