i just did some for my toon. they are strong, 2200 lb boat. 2 inch pvc, went to the muffler shop and bought some 2 inch hangers, then some all thread, nuts washers, and flat plate. went on really easy. they are so long, because we have a steep ramp, when unloading and loading i only have about 12 inches of the stern guide on above water.

you can see it has the interior guides, but are useless, on a deep ramp.

Do not comment on my rusty trailer, it is a future project.

the ones on my trailer are actually steel tubing,, probably electrical conduit type tubing with p v c slid down over the pipe and the p v c actually spins if the rub rail makes contact with it sort of like a side roller. I have a hydraulic pipe bender and plan on making new ones using heavy galvanized pipe in place of the thin wall tubing on there currently.

They probably wouldnt break with a pontoon boat, as it really isnt that heavy. Plus you wouldnt have a sudden harsh bump with the toons this way. Should keep it from denting them I would think.
On my 17' Boat I have the guide-ons that are an aluminum pole with pvc over it, it however would break them.

The one and only time I tried this was on an 1800lb 20' sailboat and it broke one without much bumping. Sch 80 pvc was used thinking it would be strong enough...the pipe slid over galv square unistrut bases and they attached to the frame. It only took one good hit to bust the pvc. My 20' toon is around 3000lbs and would have trashed those pvc guides in anything but millpond smooth conditions. I would reserve pvc use for 14' skiffs...but I also single hand launch 90% of the time and depend on the guides to do some work for me.
