Anyone ever go on one?
Are they worth it?
Talking exotic animals here, not your average white tail.

Re: Guided Hunts

Hey Spinner, I assume you will be doing the hunt here in the states as opposed to spending the big green to hunt over in Africa. Those guided hunts can be alot of fun and they do give you a chance to hunt animals you would not normally get a chance to, but some people feel that because the animals are on a fenced "farm", there is no sport to it. I say go for it. I believe most of the hunts for exotics take place in Texas just because of the climate. Get on-line and do your research. Find the species you want to hunt and the guides that handle those hunts then check references and hunt policies. Some guides charge by the size of the animal, some are just a flate rate for the whole package and others charge for accomodations then charge another fee if you shoot an animal. When I say shoot, I mean just that. If you shoot and only wound an animal but you don't recover it, you will still be charged a full fee.
Good luck and have fun. There's nothing like the sound of a broadhead as it punches through the chest cavity of a big game animal.

They vary a lot, Spinner.

At best, they are a real hunt where you pit your predator skills against the animal's survival skills. At worst they are a choreographed harvest where the only skill tested is your marksmanship.

I don't know about you, but the second scenario is not attractive at all to me. Before you contract, get some references from past clients.

Les..... I'm sure JB would take you on a guided Armadillo hunt at the Hideout and even use his tractor to help you drag it back..... for the proper sum of $$$$$$$$$$ :D For a few extra bucks...... you might even get a chance at a nut stealing rat!

Alaska is the place to go. My brother in-law does guided hunts all through out the year. Most folks go up to hunt bear, and moose. People will pay a premium to hunt with him some have paid as much as 30K.

Re: Guided Hunts

To me a "guided hunt" is the equivalent of shopping at the mall. How about reading up on your intended area and species, contact the local jurisdiction for rules and regs, then spend a few days at the local watering hole talkin' with the locals? Then head out and test your meddle. Might be more fun, exciting, rewarding, and a learning experience. Concentrate on safety first.
Good luck

Depending on where your going for your hunt its a great experience. You will get to see how other skilled hunters work there hunting areas plus see way better scenery that you would probably ever see on your own. The cool thing is the guides do all the work. That's what you pay them for.
What kind of exotic animals are you after and where?

Re: Guided Hunts

BIL did a mountain lion hunt last year in Utah.
Cost him approx $4500.
Hiked and drove around for 3 days, then they found some decent sized tracks, got the dogs out and chased it for a day.

Finally got close enough to put an arrow through it. 178#, 13.5" head.

Had cat for Christmas Eve snacks last month.
Tastes like a very very lean pork roast, with a bit stronger taste.

He was thrilled with the hunt.

Re: Guided Hunts

Regardless of where you plan to hunt (Texas or Africa), research your Outfitter very carefully. There are a lot of bad guide services out there (more bad than good) and I can tell you first hand that there is little worse than paying thousands and getting taken for a ride. Cabela's offers a decent booking service, but even here you have to be careful. Also, as mentioned earlier in this thread, this will be a high fence hunt so make sure you're ok with this before going. Hunting these animals with archery equipment will make this a more challenging and realistic hunt. Have fun and best of luck.
