I played for the first time this past weekend and 3 minutes into it I knew I had to get it. What a blast.

I see Guitar Hero 3 is about to come out, but I don't know much about it. Wait for it? Buy Guitar Hero 2? How about the 80s version - any good?

How about 2 players at the same time - do all versions have that?

What else is there to know about it?

Re: Guitar Hero - who's played it?

My kids play it all the time, even in the car  Usually two players, one on bass and one on lead they call it co-op. They can also be in compete mode and then they are both on lead. I tried it once. I play guitar and I think that actually messed me up. I couldn't get the timing down. Great song library, mostly 70s and 80's stuff so it doesn't bug me. I've actually said "I like this song, so you better not mess up" :D Get the wireless guitars ;)

I have Guitar Hero II for the xbox 360 and love it. I second the wireless guitar suggestion. My girlfriend plays it non stop. I barely get to play it as a result unless she gets stuck on a song.

Sorry, I like the kill 'em all and let god sort them out type of games. Helps releave some of my frustrations. Get to kill things with out going to jail. I think they call them first person shooter games and also the Dungens and Dragons type games like Diablo and Morrowind. At least they have challenges and puzzles to solve. Just can't see a game where I act like I'm playing a guitar...ANIMAL :D

The first time I seen it I thought "This is so stupid, why don't these kids learn how to play a real guitar" but it is fun to play.

I understand that its the rage for folks who dont play. that said I discouraged my 14 year old from buying the game. I also discouraged him from playing songs using tab codes from the internet. The tab code easily identifys the string and fret of every note to the lead of a song. Due to tabs there is a large population of kids who think they know how to play guitar. My inlaws would rave about how and what little guitar pros they had in the family. lol...They dont know what a cord is but they can pick stairway to heaven

I handed my son my guitar this summer and hes learning the basics. Now I got a jaming buddie. Since Ryans playing the guitar his younger brother decided to play trumpet in the school band. There older brother plays drums and guitar. Could get interesting.

Yes. If one has the dicipline to do it the hard way (work hard on the fundamentals) it pays off in the long run. That is true for just about everything.

I do know people that play guitar and play the game too though. One doesn't really effect the other.

Re: Guitar Hero - who's played it?

I was at Walmart the other day and noticed a crowd of people gathered around some guy playing Guitar Hero that was set up as a display. This guy was no amateur - he had a smile a mile wide and was rocking the hell out of "Freebird".

I've never picked up a guitar in my life but I wouldn't mind learning. Looked kind of fun.

I didn't get the sense that it's meant as a substitute or shortcut for really playing the guitar - it's more like a caricature of it. I wouldn't have even considered trying it because I'd thought otherwise (like some have commented) and that's why I'm so surprised by how much fun it is.

I read that the wireless guitars lose their signal - I gather that this isn't the case from your posts. The wireless controllers we have don't do this so I was surprised to read that it was a problem with some of the wireless guitars.

Wait for the next version? Buy the current version? Buy the 80s version (I graduated from highschool in '85 so that seems right up my alley)?

Re: Guitar Hero - who's played it?

The game, Guitar Hero is awesome!
I too, thought it was a stupid game, UNTIL I picked it up and tried it! I was off sick from work for a week and by the time I went back to work, I was addicted to the game! I played it for hours and hours.
Since then, I've bought the new one, Guitar Hero, Rock the 80's....it is pretty sweet! Lots of cool tunes from when I was growing up.
Next month, "Rock Band" comes out. That game includes a guitar, bass guitar a mic and drums too!!!

I will have to disagree with those who say that playing the game "Guitar Hero" does not help someone with learning to play the guitar. I have an accoustic electric guitar which I have never really gotten around to learn how to play, but always wanted too. (I guess I never put enough time into learning how to play).
But now that I have played Guitar Hero, it encouraged me to learn to play my guitar.
I'm taking lessons online and getting quite good at it!!!

I encourage anyone who wants to play the guitar, to try Guitar Hero first!

I agree. I'm learning the electric guitar and guitar hero is helping me get a handle on what i was having trouble with. I was having a heck of a time getting my ring finger and pinky finger to cooperate with the frets. My wife bought me guitar hero II for my birthday last week and already my pinky and ring finger are just as limber as the other two. I can already see an easier time with the real thing. I do really like the game, play nightly. I to thought it stupid. They had it on display at Best buy and I tried it. It actually was fun to play. I do plan on getting the rock game when it comes out, I play drums and I can definietly see that one being fun, singing however, well, lets just say you will never see me on American Idol, even in a karaoke bar for that matter.

Re: Guitar Hero - who's played it?

My only point Im gonna make is if you guys spent as much time learning the real thing as the game you would be a much better guitar player.........Its almost like saying playing a racing game makes you a better driver then if you were to practice in a real car.......All it does is help with dexterity and at the very best help you work on you timing..........But if it adds to your interest in guitar by all means keep playing :D As a guitar teacher I can tell you its night and day from the real thing

Re: Guitar Hero - who's played it?

I personally know many teenagers and younger who, thanks to Guitar Hero, now appreciate some of the great music of my generation, Freebird is a good example...my nephews (elementary age) brought it over to spend a weekend - I couldn't put it down - gotta say, I can rock the he** out of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking"............

Re: Guitar Hero - who's played it?

Yah, I agree jtexas....my 4 year old girl even picks it up and tries to play it. It's only a matter of time before she learns how to play. Funny....when we are driving our car, and a song from Guitar Hero comes on the radio, she notices it right away and says "Guitar Hero daddy". I just smile when she says that.
Also, on a side note...if you have a PS3 or XBox 360, you can download any song in the world onto your computer and then your PS3 or XBox 360 can configure it to play on Guitar Hero......WAY COOL!!! (if you want to learn how to do it, then just search on youtube...there is a step-by-step walkthrough).
