Are you guys fishing or not? Where can you fish? Where can you not fish? What are you catching or not catching fish (seafood)? Offshore and inland.

I launch out of biloxi and have yet to go this year because of the closure ... some inshore fishing can be had although it is getting harder to find with the states waters being closed in large areas ... offshore from alabama & miss. is pretty much closed as well ... I had to go all the way to cabo san lucas to wet a hook

Re: Gulf Coast Conditions?

We're still fishing here in Panama City. Some tar washed up on the beach last weekend but the wind and currents have been pushing the spill away. I was talking to a charterboat deckhand the other day and he said some days they come across oil and other days they wont see any. I gonna try to get some scollops this weekend probly be my last chance in my lifetime to do that. But the bays are holding up well. I just hope we can stop it before it gets in the bays.

So far it is. However, small amounts of tar balls are showing up on the beaches. Right now thay haven't determined if this is from passing ships navigating through our ship channel which may be carrying it on the hull of their boats or from the actual oil spill.

The recent low pressure that sat off the Louisiana coast which is finally inland, had a westerly track the past couple of days which could have had something to do with it. Additionally Hurricane Alex last week put us at the northweast quadrant could have played a role in bringing oil to the Texas coast. Nobody is sure or they just aren't saying, but the fishing is good. I currently don't know of any areas that are closed for fishing along the Texas coast.

UPDATE:

The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management stated this morning that tar balls found on Bolivar Peninsula and East Beach (Galveston Island) this past weekend are confirmed to be from the Deepwater Horizon event. The tar balls are small with the largest being about the size of a ping-pong ball.

The beaches and waterways remain open.

Water is fine down here near Port Mansfield and Port Isabel. My brother and I went out of Port Mansfield about 25 miles out to the close rigs and caught some monster red snapper a couple weekends ago.

Here in Clearwater the fishing is outstanding. Seems the fish are running to escape the oil and running here! Just up north of us, the scallops are thick and easy to limit out. Going fishing and scalloping Thursday and looking forward to a great day!

Re: Gulf Coast Conditions?

I live on the Louisiana gulf cost near Vermilion Bay area an ALL of our inshore state waters are back open to rec. fishing an as of this past thursday that a-lot of commercial fishing was opening back up. The only places shut down still is where the oil has actually came on shore. The oil had never really made it west to us so we go VERY lucky. The water quality is good to very good around here as of now.
