Gulp Baits?

We're heading for the S.C. coast for Thanksgiving weekend and plan some fishing in the Ashley tidal river(Salt/Fresh Mix). I have several bags of those stinking Gulp Baits(Freshwater and Saltwater), look like big rubber shrimp. I've been trying to use these things for several years and have Never caught any fish with them! Any of you guys had any luck with these Gulp baits or should I just go get some real bait shrimp?
Any ideas?

Re: Gulp Baits?

I've had success with redfish, using the Gulp "New Penny" shrimp, rigged on a 1/4 oz jig head, usually orange or pink. Works real good if you drift or troll with the tide, and keep it bumping along the bottom. Occasionally, jerk the rod forward a foot or so with a sharp snap, popping the line, as this mimics the movement of a shrimp, and nearby fish can feel this movement with their lateral line, as well as seeing the movement.

Also, if you take a DOA shrimp, pull the weight out of the belly, and remove the factory hook, and thread that onto a 1/4 oz jig head, it's very effective on trout. Don't believe me? Watch this:

Now, if you enjoy feeding pinfish and every other trash fish out there, by all means, use live shrimp, (at 7 dollars a dozen).... otherwise, you're better off with artificial lures. This time of year, the pinfish are so bad, a live shrimp won't last a few seconds. (I hate those bait-stealing SOB's.....I kill every single one I catch, and I know that ain't even putting a dent in their populations)

I haven't caught a darn thing with Gulp. I was very hopeful, bought a variety of stuff and nothing.
Even perch that will pretty much eat anything ignore it sadly.

When it comes to fishing with artificial lures, it's all in the presentation of the lure, that determines whether a fish will strike the lure, or ignore it.

That's one of my go to rigs. Cut a 4" new penny shrimp, put it on a jig head. I try mostly to target schools of reds and throw it about 15 feet in frot of them. I've fought many over slow reds with them. I even cought a 18" flounder two trips ago on one. Deffenitly my favorite bait! Good luck. Ps. I cut it in 1/2 cuz I get the same result and get twice the bait, they ain't cheap.

Yeah, my only complaint about Gulp baits is that they're not like other plastic baits. If you leave them on a hook, even overnight, they turn rock-hard, and then they're useless. So, you have to take it off the hook every time you're done, and store it in its original container. But we all know what happens to a plastic bait when you put a hook in it 3 or 4 times, it's done.

But again, the Gulp baits are so effective, the pros outweigh the cons.

I have had a little luck with them mostly on grouper and grunts. Don't like them much though they are kind of stiff and dont have much action regardless of how you work them, the end result is about the same action as the jig head with a 2"-3" piece of surgical tube tied to it. I have much better luck on the DOA shrimp. If i cant get a fish on a DOA it's time to go home! And you can use a DOA trip after trip but they usualy get tore up and by the end of a slow day or after about 6 fish.

Well, thanks guys for your thoughts on these Gulp baits, and I'm gonna try cutting one in half on a jig head, bounce it on the bottom...maybe I get lucky this weekend!...but what the heck, a bad day fishing, I'll take it!;)

You can also try it under a popping cork. Try around oyster reefs on an incoming tide.

I have had very good luck with Gulp shrimp, but only on a Jig, nothing beats live shrimp, but they are close, they do have to be constantly worked that has been my experience can't just cast'em and sit!they work better for me then a soft plastic. However I was just up in NW Pennsylvania for a few days, and fished some parts of the Allegany river and a few small freshwater lakes, not that familiar with freshwater, I went to the local wal-mart picked up a cheap $20 rod, and a variety of Gulp products for freshwater(worms, maggots), never got a hit, I obsevered small pan-fish come up to bait sniff then swim off, so saltwater I have had great experience with them and the pins have a hard time with'em, but freshwater forget-it!

I tore up some trout with Gulp shrimp and a 1/4 oz jig head this weekend. Like everyone says, drifting it with the tide near the bottom or even reeling it slowly in got me about 6 trout in the span of 15 minutes off a pier near Yulee, FL last weekend.

Re: Gulp Baits?

I used Gulp leeches in fresh water against live leeches for walleye. I caught about 2 to 1 over the live leeches. Son said it was technique, but I am not that good and he is not that bad. Perch and bait ate his leeches up but left mine alone.

Whether this success would transfer to salt water lures and salt water fishes I know not, but when I go for walleye or smallies it is the right ticket.

Gulp camo sandworm is called "crack" out here on the west coast. Surf perch can't resist it.

I'm in Cali and love perch! I'm having a tough time imagining the ones we catch inhaling a whole worm like that. Do you cut them in chunks? Or what size do you use? I'd like to head out and perch fish soon in a spot I go, but nobody uses anything but pieces of shrimp from the store and live grass shrimp. A new cheaper "crack-like" bait would be awesome! Could you go into a bit more detail on how you use this bait? We usually have the 1oz weight on the bottom and run 2 hooks up the line. One a foot above the weight and another a foot above that. I usually put one grass shrimp per hook, as the perch's mouths are so small.

Hope this isn't a thread jack, but anyway, the crack comes in two sizes, 2" (prefered by me) and six inch. Cut the 6" in thirds. The seaweed/kelp won't allow a spike in my area, so I hand hold a carolia rig w/ a #2 hook and stay mobile, to search for the fish holding structure. The #2 hook is to avoid dinks and guthooks. I thread the worm far enough so that the hook eye is just into the body. Helps keep the worm on and puts the business end down where the short biters hit. I only keep 10" and above, smaller ones aren't worth the meat vs cleaning effort ratio. Tight lines.

I don't think it's a thread jack. You're talking about how to fish with a type of gulp bait. :) and Thanks! I'll give that a try for sure. Any chance on a picture of one rigged? Or a simple MSpaint drawing ? I just want to make sure I'm picturing this right. We toss back the little guys too for the most part. Biggest I've caught was only like 15 inches though and those felt like monsters compared to the normal 8-12 inch guys.

Re: Gulp Baits?

big secret for making them last longer on your hook... a drop of superglue on the jig hook before you slide it all the way up :)
