Local man goes to the river a couple weekends ago. Puts his boat in, and heads off down the river. Some how manages to hit a stump. Everything was okay except for the 9mm pistol that fell off the seat beside him, hit the bottom of the boat and went off two times. Hit him in the stomach and the shoulder. Classic victim of stupidity!!! Just glad no one else was hurt.

Re: Gun Shot Victim

Having collected and worked on firearms for over 40 years, I would be quite interested as to exactly HOW a 9mm discharged twice from a fall. Even one shot would be unusual.....seems like there's more to the story.

Maybe he carried it "locked and loaded" in case some fish wants to give trouble......................;)

I'm going out on a limb here and say the gun probably wasn't in the best shape.

Re: Gun Shot Victim

I'm with Sunkentreasure on this one. There is more to this story than someone is telling. It would be almost impossible for it to accidently fire TWICE if dropped. It's always easiest to blame it on the gun and not the stupid person ....

You will have cycling problems with a semi-auto pistol from "limp-wristing" (not holding your wrist tightly) because the force from the recoil goes into moving your hand instead of cycling the slide. A totally unsupported pistol could possibly go off once if dropped, but the recoil would then just push the entire pistol around instead of cycling the slide and reloading it for another shot. A typical 9mm pistol has about a 15 lb recoil spring (means it takes 15 lb of force to compress it, in my experience some women have problems loading a 9mm Glock because they can't cycle the slide to load the first round). The weight of the pistol itself is only 3 or 4 lbs for a HEAVY 9mm. Something (usually your hand) has to be supporting the frame of the pistol to absorb the force required to compress the recoil spring.

Re: Gun Shot Victim

Welcome to the forum!

I am with the rest of these guys, something just doesn't sound right here. I am not the most familiar with firearms although i have handled a few. 2 accidental discharges from one fall just doesn't add up right. I would think the firearm would have to be in really bad shape for that to happen.

Let us know if more of the story comes out! :)

I have a Ruger p89th Davidsons edition 9mm

I wife will shoot this every once in a while, 4 times out of ten she's jamming the gun. Limp wristing.

I'm with the others as well. More to the story.

Re: Gun Shot Victim

I bet my lunch money on failed suicide attempt. In addition to the physics discussed above, the gun falling off the seat beside him, probably barrel forward, then spinning around and then putting 2 rounds back at him in a 18" grouping....not happening.

Only one possibility (and I wouldn't confuse it with probability) is that he put a rope through the trigger guard in case he dropped it overboard*, which pulled and jammed the trigger down, and the gun fell and wedged against something to support the recoil. Maybe he fell in the bottom of the boat too. I think it's the Glock that has the "safety grip" on the trigger rather than the back of the grip like the old Colts?

Re: Gun Shot Victim

Sounds fishy to me. And what exactly was stupid? The fact he had a gun? The fact it was not secured properly? The fact it was loaded? Or the fact that it had a round chamberd and was cocked.Or the safty not engaged?(if it had one). Or are you implying it was just stupid for him to have a gun ingeneral? Please clarify.

What size bass is he fishing for that he needs to keep his loaded, safety off, 9mm right by his side?

Re: Gun Shot Victim

Stupid is trying to get us to believe that there were two accidental discharges caused by the weapon falling off the seat. I would like to know the make and model. Colt All American has the safety in the trigger and cannot accidentally discharge. Glocks won't accidentally discharge either. Maybe its a cheap Chinese version, but still think its B.S.

However, putting a proactive twist on the thread, my rules on Firearm Safety:
Weapons shall be secured in a holster or case at all times.
Semi-automatics shall not be stored with a round in the chamber.
Weapon shall only be removed from the holster or case when intended to fire and kill.
Weapon shall only be pointed at the intended target with the full intention of killing.
A firearm has only one purpose in life, that is to kill.
Its not a toy, not for showing off and not for "scarring".

With that in mind, what the F*%# was he doing with an unsecured, live round chambered firearm sitting on his seat? Perhaps a good example of Darwinian evolution. And these people breed...

Guess this makes you think twice about taking someones favorite fishing spot if the are packin'

The only reason we ever carried a firearm aboard a boat was in Alaska to shoot 200 lbs halibut before bringing them on board the Achilles with us, but it was always in condition 3.

first I highly doutb the probablility of this happening as others have said. I would tend to think maybe someone else in the boat and he's protecting them? don't know.

for those who keep saying the safety was off? many 9mm's do not have safetys mine doesn't. the safety is when it's not loaded, if it's loaded it's ready.

I agree with everyone else here, the gun would not go off two times if dropped.
I?m one of the people that carry a gun pretty much all the time. On the boat the gun is stored under a seat in its case.
