Re: Gung's 115 hp 1974 Overhaul so Far

two cycle I have 2 marine batteries fully charged. I got so much to check. you know that first test fire . that is why i would like to get a quick test start up .. Check all those things an correct them . I never used the water flush ears or how that all works like I explaned earlier. Things like will my carbs leak and check my fuel hose connections does the charging system work and set the timming . but i suppose i can just put the *** end of the boat in the water on the trailer and test it that way .I am excited wanting to fire it up.

Well, that's the theory. I've talked on the phone and via email several times with Wisco. It seems thier marketing department is driving the R&D process. They say thier customers want easier assembly. I'm increasingly believing that the Wisco brand is all about marketing and not about science.

The direct charge inlines come with enough rules as it is. Adding Wisco pistons to them makes for even more rules to try to keep it together.

What really stinks is that the aftermarket Persan pistons are much cheaper than Wisco, and use the same rings (and hold up as good) as the Mercury pistons. It's just that people (and unknowledgeable shops) trust the Wisco name branding more. Shame really.

-W

Ear muffs clamp, by their own spring pressure, over the water pickup holes in the lower unit. You hook up the water hose and turn it on, I usually put it full blast to insure plenty of water if the engine wants it. Water will run all over everythere around the muffs and all over the lower unit but that's ok.

I'd turn it over a few times by hand before you try to start it to insure that things are not binding.

That's it. Crank her up.

Mark

well that is what i will do .. i will clamp on the muffs and see if i get ignition . It does turn over by hand .and i got compression and spark... I will try it tomarrow . I sure hope those pistons work out. i want to hear it run tomarrow. i assembly lubed it up good . if it blows it blows right .. start all over .. I hope i set that distribitor and timming belt right . the manual was not to clear on how to do it exacly . i will get my timming light out .

Clams there is nothing I can do now. I put them in. The powerhead is ready to start.I did have the sierra pistons on my list. They were cheeper .I payed 89.54 each for the wiseco pistons . 6 of them $537.27 .The sierra ones were @ $79.00 each ..$10.00 difference. Yes I was in full debate on what pistons to use.The wiseco forged pistons got the reputation of being indestructable as they are marketed.and that silicone content thing with cast pistons which was the sierra deal. From what i saw was only 4 other brands availible.I spent the extra money with the thaught they must be better ..

Each piston box came with a bumper sticker . I wont stick it on anything if they end up being junk . :D :)

Wouldn't it be a good idea to run the oil/fuel mix a little richer for break-in.???? Maybe 25-1 or 35-1... ?

And I'm sorry if I missed it... But what was the cause of the original failure... Carb problem maybe? Was that fixed?

I mixed it rich a little over 35 -1 it cranked and cranked i left the choke on . then bam it fired up . no knocking . I idled it with with the water hose and ears on . it was ejecting water out the pee hole and the prop area.and some smoke .no knocking and it runs smooth as pie . WAH HOO .. LOts of thunder .. NOW thats what I am talking about .with the hood off i checked for leaks .. I lucked out ,, Or i just did it right :) .. The fuel bulb pumped up tight .the tach reads 600 rpm . it sat back there without shaking a bit.smooth as a weed wacker and smells like it .I am hiped .. GUYS IT WORKED .. I shut it down and fired it up 3 hours later .it hit right off. the timming How to know if it is right ?? I got no scale on my flywheel ??

Get some measuring tape. Measure the circumference of the the flywheel. You could also measure its diameter and the circumference is 3.14*diameter.

Anyways...
Divide that circumference by 360. And now you will know how many inches there are per degree.

Get a dial indicator gauge with a magnetic pickup. Stick it in the #1 spark plug hole and find TDC. Now mark a 0 degree tick on your flywheel. Now since you know how many inches there are per degree, from the above calculation, you can make the additional ticks needed to time the engine. You'll need a timing light as well.

Does this make sense?

andy i dialed in the zero on #1 . made the mark yesterday .i will strech out some tape and degree it .it shows a primary setting in the manual perhaps meaning idle . @ 1Degree to 3degrees.. then a max timming setting at 21 to 22 degrees at wide open throttle . i see how to adjust them .and i will have the timming light before top dead center means marks that i need should should be right of the zero mark. I will degree it both ways . and watch which way the engine spins .the other thing is at wide open throttle . with the engine going across the lake . your suppose to set that without falling out of the boat going 40 to 50 mph????

Not 21-22, make it 20-21 - don't get greedy. :D

You can set the WOT timing with the All the plugs out of the sockets and the timing light on #1. Then you can put it at WOT and crank it and it won't start.

-W
