so I end up with both the old depthfinder transducer and the speedo thingy removed from the transom(all mounting screws removed) and what pisses out of the screwholes of my supposedly bone-dry boat?---WATER-quite a bit of it, maybe a bucket or two.
What really puzzles me is why no water is coming out of the drain hole, even when I jack the boat on trailer right up. It just poured out of the screwholes. Please advise and let me just say that I have nothing but rave reviews for this site-these forums-and the informed, boat savvy members...cheers!

heat,

Your transom is obviously waterlogged.

You may be OK, if you let it drain thoroughly. It may take at least a week.

I would suggest that you drill some small holes in the cap (top) of the transom to aid in the drainage. Once drained and dry, I would recommend filling the holes with Marine Tex.

Re: H2O-wrong side of hull!!!

thanks for the info. I have seen the cap of the transom referred to in other postings. Just to clarify, are we talking about the top of the plywood-drill down from the top, not thru hull?
I'm assuming this is so you can then pour or squirt the "marine tex" or "git rot" down the holes into the crappy wood?
I have tried to keep the boat dry since I got it last fall but just recently I discovered that rain has been seeping in along ridges on either side of the hull, under my new camper-top and down the sides into the boat right onto the steps you step onto when you get in. I'm going to run two beads of caulking across these ridges to divert the water so it runs down the outside of the hull and not the inside but I assume this has been happening for a long time unchecked, since the boat is an 82'. I am thinking maybe it is rainwater leaking out the screw holes in the transom but I can't figure out why the water is'nt coming out the drain hole. I thought when it stopped coming out the drain hole that meant all water was out!

your drain hole empties water from your bilge. the holes you created from removing the transducer just penetrate into your stern sheet (navy term) or transom. water is probably locked between the fiberglass, inside your transom, in the wood. drilling holes in the top will aide in letting it out the bottom. keep it out of the weather for a week or so to dry, try to get some git-rot inside the best you can, then patch the holes with marine-tex or associated 3m product. enjoy-

Seems to me if the water is coming out that badly that the transom may be waterlogged beyond just drying. I would drill the holes on top and along bottom to let the water out then after a week or so I would pour penetrating epoxy into the top holes and let it seep into the wood. I saw a post, either here or on the fiberglassics site, about doing this rather than replacing a transom.

Almost forgot....you might want to stick a rod into your drain hole to make sure you don't have something blocking it. I have seen that happen. A piece of old foam breaks loose or maybe some of the underside flooring got wet and came apart and blocked the hole. Worth checking while your there.

Re: H2O-wrong side of hull!!!

thanks again for all the great info guys.

My boat is a 1982 Peterborough with a cuddy. It is 20ft. long and has a slant nose. The motor is a 305 Chev. (OMC 260). The drive is an 800 series with a stringer for trim(big drag). Love the boat though!
"HEATZONE EXPRESS" is her name

Heatzone - Please do a bunch of research before you do anything. Visit the Project Boats section on this site also.

You need to determine the exact extent of the damage. You can do this by tapping the inside of the tramsom with a mallet or hammer. A dull thud indicates rot. You can usually get a pretty good idea of the area of the rot just by the sound. Then take a drill with a 1/4" or so bit and drill around and in the area you suspect. Examine the "stuff" that comes out of the hole as you drill. Punch a couple of holes where you think the wood is sound for comparison.

If the rotten area is minor you may be able to dry it out and kill the rot without replacing the transom. There are a couple of posts that talk about using automotive antifreeze to chemically kill the rot. Sounds crazy but I have read a couple of articles on it and it seems to be effective.

I doubt that Get Rot will be absorbed far enough into the wood to be any good. Marine Tex is a fabulous product but is great for patching holes but will not flow into rotten wood. There are products that will do the job but I don't remember their names just now.

If the rot is fairly extensive you will have no alternative other than biting the bullet and replacing the transom. And quite often if there is rot in the transom there will be rot in the stringers.

Heatzone, go to rotdoctor.com, they have a product called "CPES" wich they tested and just 6ml penetrated 16" into the wood. It is designed for the problem you have. It not only makes the existing wood stroger than original but also eliminates the possibility of rot down the road. It is lightyears ahead of "git-rot. The web site goes through transom repair step by step....Good luck and hope it helps.
