Am I the only one that has resigned himself never, ever, never to own an I/O again? <br /><br />You could not give me an I/O I keep my boat in the water so it gets used, and I have found that it is all but impossible to do any maintance or even minor repairs without pulling her out. Give me a Inboard any day.....

Sorry to hear that. I just bought a Wellcraft I/O. No problems yet. I hope yours get solved soon.

OK, I have to put my few cents in…. I’ve owned many out boards, inboards and I/O’s and I have all three right now so I don’t think I’m biased, by far the most durable and inexpensive maintenance and repairs has been with strait inboards for me. Maybe it’s just luck, who knows? I try to stick to the older stuff from inland up north, without all the electronic crap on it just to make the motor run, and away from the salt and brackish water. I may pay a little more for fuel and the performance for the same size motor suffers a little, but when it comes time to fix it I’d rather track down a breaker points problem then a computer or wiring problem with two gazillion wires running all over the place. All I need to run my boat is spark and fuel at the right time, when your twenty five miles out in the ocean and you got your cover off because the engine quit what do you do with the computer and all the sensors it takes to make the motor run? You call sea tow if your lucky enough to be in hailing distance because you ain’t gonna get it running.

I am running a 1984 Evinrude on my fishing rig and I would not trade it for anything. Even dead-eye **** Chaney could not kill this thing!<br /><br />I would not give up my I/O either---nothing beats it for a comfortable day on the water.<br /><br />One boat and motor just won't do it all.

BTW, I have had black anchors and I generally love 'em. They are stupid though, two 90* directional changes of power and you can't get them out of the water without a trailer or hoist.<br /><br />I am sort of an efficiency freak, so inboards kinda bug despite their simplicity. Fact is that the only products developed from the beginning as a Marine package are OBs (yes, I know about the origin of some of the 4 strokers). With the Etecs not requiring any maintenance for three years, they start to look pretty impressive.<br /><br />Definitely depends on the boat too, and I have a hard time giving up the V8 growl . . . I have had no issues with my Bravo1 and I had an Alpha go about 7 years of hard use with nothing but a couple of impellers and fluids.<br /><br />Also, I am actually more confident with electronic engines. They have come a long way. Almost all large commercial diesels have gone to full electronics and they are more efficient and easier to diagnose. I do not have any electronic paranoia, actually quite the opposite for me.

I go with Always Broke, when I'm 25 miles out I want something simple to fix. I know electronice are very reliable but they do fail and you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time when they do. $50 will by me all the spares I might need to carry. Not so with electronics.

I'm a Merc guy....there....that is out in the open. I have nothing against Volvo's, I just don't think they are the Holy Grail.<br />I have to say that the size of the boat and what you do with it has a large part in what makes the most sense. A 30 foot or larger boat......straight inboards for me, thanks, been there , done that with the whole I/O thing. As for electronics, I'm not afraid of it, but when something that weighs less than one pound and will fit in your coat pocket costs over $1,500.00 and will stop your boat from running.....time to go back to simpler technology. Again, I love the fuel injection systems on my corvette and Cadillac, but when Merc puts an MEFI3 system in a boat......and disscontinues the ECM a few years later and the only replacement costs 1.5K.....that's just plain stupid.....give me a carb anyday.
