Nothing makes ya more mad than locking yourself out of house or auto. I have spares hidden for both such situations, mistakes happen, I'm sure you will agjust and fix this.

We upgraded all the locks on the house last year. Funny thing you couldn't buy the kind of lock that lets you know the handle is locked because the inside one doesn't turn. Like yours the inside handle would turn even though it was locked thus locking you out of the house. In order to get the same locks but without that unfortunate feature I had to order them online. We had the retail version for two days before I returned them and figured out the deal and everyone but me locked themselves out of the house in that time.

Did the same thing at my girl friend's new Big Bear house the first day we were at it. We broke through the cheapest window in the house to get back in. We now have a lock box mounted outside.

The lock box is a fine idea.

Re: had to break into new house - geez!!! ;)

I brought my boat to a guys storage shed a couple days ago. His pontoon was already sitting on timbers in the shed. When I left I locked the door. Door was unlocked when I arrived. Went to the guys house to pay him and mentioned I locked the door(I guess he never locks it). He said both keys were in the shed. What???!!!

Went home and told the wife. She reminded me how I got into our house in minutes after we were locked out with no keys(I've since dead bolted our house. Maybe that's not enough from what I'm reading! I guess if a robber really wants to get in they'll get in). Anyway, I went back to the shed and was inside in minutes. Didn't break or ruin anything...... He was going to grab the keys and re lock it. Not that it's very secure if I could get in. He was still happy.

I didn't have to break into mine. Some scumbag did it for me. With the dog barking and the alarm sounding, he didn't stick around for introductions. Nothing lost but the door frame.

We have a spare key house key in our garage. O/H door in garage has a key pad to allow access to me and DW. Having the key in a locked garage is more secure than a hidden key but we still have access to it, just in case.

... at least you didn't break into someone else's house in a drunken stupor. There's always a positive side.

My only problem with the garage door is what do I do if the power is out?

Neighbor and I each have keys.

I'm thinking about putting a key on one of the dogs collars, he is friendly, only if I am next to him.

At my regular home, I do the garage door way too. What are the chances that you are locked out of the house and the power is out at the exact same time?

Just in case you have that double key dead bolt for each side .. you might want to hang an extra inside key on the inside somewhere close. Fire hazard if your fumbling for your keyring.

Actually homeowners/Renters Insurance is kinda cheap .. it (should) covers your vehicles and personal property.

There is no reason to lock yourself out LOL .. find a good hide spot for a backup ( I like to use my wallet ).

Everyone is using C cards now .. so there is no reason to not hold a key in your wallet or purse.

YD.

We upgraded to an electric lock (key pad). No key needed. Very handy for the kids coming home from school, no lost keys, no hidden spare needed.

That kind of happened in this area ... a drunk was trying to wake his girlfriend to let him in, unfortunately it was the neighbors house. Neighbor didn't take kindly to being awakened in the middle of the nights to cursing and threats if he didn't let the guy in. Drunk was shot and killed as he tried to break in the door.

So, yes, a very positive side ...

Don't feel bad, I kinda gotta laugh Heinz, it happened to me as well when we moved into our place and I bet it happens to everyone.

I bet that's why everyone has big rocks scattered around thier yards, to hide keys under, LOL
