Every time I'm up on a ladder wiring something my wife loves to sneak up behind me, pinch me on the leg and give a loud BZZZZZZZT while she's doing it. Gets me every friggin time.

Been "juiced" a few times in my life , and , it aint fun !
Also why I NEVER put a phone or pager on "vibrate" .
One time I was repairing an electric fence , when all of a sudden my pager went off .
It took me 15 minutes to climb down out of the tree I was under !

Worked in the semiconductor industry for 18 years mostly on manufacturing equipment. Got to play with everything from 480VAC down to TTL including mV range controls. None of this prepared me for what I did at home while hanging a new light on the wall. I put a really cool porch light on my living room wall. Looked like an old fashioned lantern you see in movies hanging on docks. I wanted to 'hide' the wire that came up from an outlet below it. It had to be a precise length. How's the best way to determine the exact length? Well, you plug the cord into the outlet, pull the cord up tight then cut the cord with a pair of dikes. After your sight returns you finish making the connection then reset the breaker. Now would be a good time to turn on the TV and relax in the recliner. You deserve a break.

Re: HAHA I jsut got shocked at work

I learned a lot from my Dad. One of things was to turn off the breaker. I learned this because he did not believe in turning off the breaker (Ok it was fuses in those days)

We were pulling wire through conduit into our garage. He pulled and left the ends stripped and hanging in the air. I had a hold of a steel I-Beam that was bolted to the garage floor with one hand. One of the wires poked me so I grabbed a hold of it with the other hand.

I did not mean to scream, but my chest contracted so fast, the scream came out without me trying. All I saw was white specks. Luckily, I did not grab a hold too tight our I don't think I would have been able to let go. I had a huge headache and was dizzy for the rest of the day.

Now I have an AC proximity tester. I test a known live circuit to make sure it works. Then I test the circuit I am working on. If I am unsure at all, the Fluke Meter comes out.

The only time this failed was when I was working on a hanging light fixture that was hooked to knob and tube wiring. I tested with the tester and the meter. I found out the switch was on the neutral and since there was no ground, the testers did not work. when I replaced the socket, I put the proximity tester up to the new socket and it lit up like a Christmas tree. Glad I used a fiber glass ladder and did not make my own ground.

My boss had two rules #1 Never Assume the power is off
#2 The home owner/Manger is always wrong.

Worked with a guy named Ron. He Assumed too much. His new name is Mo-ron.

Worst accident I've seen was at a power station where a guy used a hacksaw on a 400Kv power cable.......the wrong cable!!

The inquiry never did find out why he wasn't killed, then again they never found the hacksaw either, it just seemed to vaporise. He was badly burned and temporarily blinded for several days but I'm sure he felt very lucky: the same company had a similar accident just the previous month which proved to be fatal.

Goes without saying, that company has dramatically altered it's practises and working procedures since then!
