Re: Hand held GPS questions

Get the etrex legend cx or vista cx. I have the legend c (cx has more memory for maps). Maps are around $100 additional, but you can get them later. Battery life is about 20 hrs., but you can run it on a cigarette lighter plug. Legend CX is about $250. I will got mine from GPScity.com on line. If they block this I can send you a PM with the web site. After you get it, you will find all sorts of things to use it for.

Re: Hand held GPS questions

I have a Lowrance H2O C, with the Mapcreate Topo for Canada. This is a good unit for what it is, but it doesn't give directions and is hard to read while driving. Also it eats batteries if not plugged in.

For driving, I picked up a Nuvi 255w. Gives turn-by-turn and is great for finding things in town. Also much easier to read while driving. The maps are good but when driving off highway trying to find a lake, I have to go back to the H20.

For the boat I have a combo. Lowrance 522C. I tried using the hand held on the boat as a gps but the screen was too small. Hard to set the trolling speed at the back of an 18' boat when the tiny screen is plugged in at the front. I much prefer the bigger screen as I can see when I am at 2mph. Also, it uses the same maps as the H2O. I picked up a navionics map card for it as well, but it only shows detail for one lake in my area so I revert back to the Topo maps. No depth detail but the shoreline is very good. If the lakes I fished on were on the Navionics chip, I might use it instead.

I like the Lowrance products (but did not see one like the Nuvi for the truck) and the H2O plus topo is a bit cheaper than the similar Garmin setup any time I priced it. But Garmin is the bigger name and is easier to get.

I've got the Magellan Crossover with marine charts on sd card for it. It works really well. Handheld with good windshield mount. It has car, hiking, and marine options. The BlueNav charts are very detailed and well worth the money I think.
