I am finally getting around to buying a handheld G.P.S. but I'm having trouble sifting through the different brands and range. Entry level mapping unit with upgrade capabilities is the minimum requirement. Any & all suggestions or remarks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Garmins are super. Go to electronics and trolling motors. There's a ton written on GPS's!

Garmin GPSMAP 76S is a good unit to check out. Iboats has them for 311.15. Not a bad deal..

I also have the 76s and it has been the best hand held gps I have ever used. The only problem with the garmin gpsmap76s is the lack of a usb port, you will have to buy an adapter if you don't have a computer with a serial port.

Re: Handheld G.P.S.

I've got the Garmin 76 without mapping. In my opinion, the handheld screens are just too small to make a very good map. I use Nobeltec on my home computer to do the charting and upload the waypoints to the GPS. If I had a cheap laptop (the upgrade), the GPS could link for a realtime map and a way more readable screen for way less $ than you would pay for a large GPS. My only real complaint with the Garmin is that they sell the unit cheap and then soak ou for the accessories. $40 for a power cord will buy a lot of batteries but the point is that there's no way it should cost that much. I just got a few rechargeables and let them keep their cord. I made my own stand, too.
