Ayuh,.....

Unless they're electrically connected to what they're protecting,.....

They'd be Totally Useless.........

Shaun,

The anode is the part that corrodes instead of the drive. Because of the massive amount of stainless steel on the back of a B3 you need a lot of exposed aluminum to complete the circuit (along with the Mercathode).

Read http://www.mercstuff.com/bravo3corrosion.htm for more info. (Don't use zinc either Look for the Merc SB that changed to aluminum anodes several years ago)

you also should test the mercathode with the reference electrode and a DMM for proper protection, its posible to over protect as well as under protect, DonS has it in the service manuals someplace .
but yes, the bravoIII will corrode away in front of your eyes if left under protected in the slip.
thats why I sell meters and electrodes to some of my customers that leave the hull in the water and have them check it once per month, also insure the mercathode still has battery power even with the battery switch off.

Re: hanging aluminum anodes overboard.

I have power to my mercathode. I switched back to aluminum zincs as everyone said that the aluminum anodes didn't last at all. I had them on mine for 1 week and they were already getting pitted a little so I switched back to camp anodes and also recomended by local marinas. (not sure what camp anodes are but I think zinc) He said that merc has no idea what they are doing and have no real fix about bravo 3 corrosion problems(03 and newer are much better) I will just keep my eye on the drive thats all but I won't use aluminum anodes that waste away in a month.
