Ok, I have my 1979 merc 80hp, 4cyl hangin upside down and the only thing holding the powerhead on is the stuck drive shaft. I have lubed it up, beat and pryed on it and it does not move! I can see where it goes into the powerhead and connects to the crank shaft (there is 1 inch or so gap) and I have sprayed lube in there. It does not want to pull out?

Any thoughts or methods to pull this shaft out? Let it hang for some time?

Thank you

Re: Hanging upside down

With some luck remove the 3 nuts and 1 bolt from the w/pump hsg. Then remove the prop shaft carrier, reach in and remove the pinion nut and the powerhead and shaft will come down, that done you will have better access to the shaft and can hammer it side to side and in and out. With penatrating oil and some luck it will loosen up

Re: Hanging upside down

I've heard of some trying a last ditch effort by chaining the lower to a tree in the yard and the upper to the back of the pick-up bupper and hitt'in the gas.

Better than taken to the junk yard!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Hanging upside down

There appear to be three bolts holding a housing cover that the drive shaft runs through, at the base of the powerhead. Would removing these 3 bolts to loosen the cover help in any way? The cover and 1 one of the bolts can be seen in the image posted.

Don't know why am concerned, don't have that much to lose!

I removed the water pump, piece by piece so now I have much more room to work between the power head and middle section!

Thank you!

Re: Hanging upside down

If your asking about my suggestion the reason to remove the w/pump fasteners was so that when the pinoin nut was removed the shaft could slide out of the unit without damaging the w/pump housing

Re: Hanging upside down

The water pump housing was already broken fron the guy I got the motor from, so removing the pump housing was not a big deal.
He had already removed the lower unit (prop shaft) before I got my hands on it.

Re: Hanging upside down

I thought we were looking at the other end sorry. Have you tryed to reach in with a air hammer on the sides of the driveshaft and try to loosen it that way. Also if the shaft is shot you could weld a nut to it and use a air impact a impact will lossen thigs that pulling and hammering won't

Re: Hanging upside down

I had tried an air hammer on it before, but not where it goes into the power head, that did not occur to me, Duh!

Anything dealing with fire will have to wait for the weather to warm up and the snow to melt, it will need to be done outside.

I do not have a shop, so I am working in a storeroom off the kitchen. Let's just say that I am having to treat my wife extra nice for putting up with having the smell of oil and other lubicrates floating through the house. She has been rather indifferent to it, I think it is shock.

She only slightly shook her head at the come-along hanging from a chain that I had run over a rafter by punching a couple of holes in the ceiling.

Re: Hanging upside down

Since the drive shaft was getting rather beat up, I decided to cut it off below the flair and pull the middle housing off. I have the powerhead off with just the cut off drive shaft sticking out of it.

My plan is to let it sit for awhile and soak in lube and then drop a short length of pipe over the shaft and weld a plate onto the shaft end and use it like a slide hammer.
Probally will take the air hammer to it as well.

Will let you know how it goes
