1975 85hp, 85ESL75, engine will not start cold unless i directly squirt fuel in carburetors. Once engine warms it will start and run great.
I have fuel at carb side of fuel pump at prime, and float bowls are filling or else it would not keep running after direct carb prime.

Choke vales close when choke switch is activated. Engine spins nice.
Compression is great.
Link and sync to include 4 degree timing setting.

Make sure the choke plates shut 100% of the way. This is adjustable by changing the position of the choke solenoid.

DHP

check choke plates when i did link/sync. Held hand over carbs as brother tried starting, same no start. choke plates seem to be doing thier job.

Does the primer bulb firm up when you prime the engine?

Re: Hard cold start

With all possible humility, I believe that you may be wrong about the choke closing 100%. The only way to be absolutely sure that they are is to look directly into the throats while someone engages the CHOKE SWITCH at the control. You do not want even to allow for any space, and both sets have to be synchronized.

The reason is that if you get a good start with a spray bottle and the motor runs fine afterwards, the only conclusion that is commonplace in the 1973-1977 V4 crossflow is that the chokes are not fully closed.

Hope this helps.

Re: Hard cold start

My brother activated the choke as i watched both close and open as he flip choke switch. When i did choke adjustment i closed chokes with my finger on the upper and lower choke shaft levers and tightened lockscrew to synchronize chokes. I then had my brother hold chokes close as i adjusted solenoid with 1/32 freeplay for plunger. I can not see how chokes will close anymore than what they are now, if you unhook choke shafts and hold chokes closed you are at the same place i am now.

Re: Hard cold start

primer ball firms up. plus if valves in fuel pump were cloged i would not get fuel at carb side of fuel pump when i squeze primer bulb, would i?

Re: Hard cold start

OK, Then when you start the motor cold, are you engaging the choke switch until the motor starts with the warm up lever fully up?

Re: Hard cold start

the only problem is that the motor won't start unless i prime directly through carbs. Otherwise engine just cranks, no fire.

Need 300 RPM to start that beast, you have enough battery?

Are your low speed jets accessible from the sides of the carbs, up by the throats - they would be behind brass screws if I remember correctly?

Re: Hard cold start

I went down and dug out the service manual for your motor, they are there.

Those jets or orifices as they call them, lead directly up to the floor of the throats of the carb -1 per throat. The holes that they supply fuel with are so small that they are hard to spot and easily clogged.

Get a can of carb cleaner and put the red plastic tube on it. One by one take the brass cover screws off the low speed orifices and insert the tube squarely in the face of the orifice so that the pressure will go through the orifice and up into the carbs. Do this one by one until you see that the liquid is comming out of each of those small holes steadily. Then button it all up and try starting the motor again.

If you don't have a manual, go to the BRP diagrams and look up your manual. You will see the #27 in the carb diagram - that is the low speed orifice cover.

This is not a substitute for a proper carb cleaning, but it should help solve your immediate problem.

Good night.

BRP Diagrams

Re: Hard cold start

Page 280 in the big Clymer manual - picture #26 has an arrow pointing to the location of your 4 low speed caps. They are describing an intermediate in the text, but you only have high and low.

If you have not started yet, put a rag flat under the carbs to catch anything that falls, (including the cleaner).

Also, you may have to remove one or more of the carb to manifold nuts to reach all 4 jets, but you should not have to actually remove the carbs.

Hope this helps.
