I have got this external hdd and it stopped functioning this morning.

I have now put it inside my comp because i thought the power supplie thing broke down.
But now in side the comp it says it isnt formatted, so I have to format first it says but it should have data on it.

How can I extract the data,

Re: hard drive

down load Knoppix (it's a flavor of linux) burn it to a cd and boot on it then mount the drive in question. I have used this to rescue data before, good luck. Also linux does not care about windows passwords or user accounts, if you can see the info you will be able to see all ( like a friend found his son's porn :D )

Similarly, I have a 128 mb thumb drive with PenDrive Linux on it just for this purpose.

Re: hard drive

If you get to the end of ideas, sometimes you can get one last boot out of a drive by freezing it for several hours and then install it and copy all the data off it. This is a last resort before you call a pro or just toss it out. It will only work once.

Re: hard drive

I have formatted it and ran a recovery program i have some data back.

Today I'm going to buy the pay version of the program It is able to recover even more and after that I'm going to try the freeze trick.

I went to the shop yesterday The thing still has replacement warranty so I will get a new one for fee that's always a nice thing
