i just put in a new tilt/trim motor on my mercruiser 165 inline six a few weeks ago, goes up and down fine now. just now taking it out do to having bad weather pryer weekends but noticed when engine is running it goes into forward easy but hard coming out. a litter harder going into reverse and alot harder getting out of reverse. worked flawlessly pryer to putting in pump. there is a wire coming from the reverse momentary cut off switch going to a little junction block mounted on the tilt/trim housing. the other side of junction block has a blue wire going back to pump motor. i put everything back exactly as i took it apart. thing that concernes me is the original pump hsg was alum. the new one is plastic. would it be a ground problem? thanks ken

The interupter wiring grounds out the coil , has noting to do with trim. To test, move the rocker with your finger. motor should quit. Either that or a bad lower shift cable.

Yup!

The shift interrupt switch is, as stated, part of the ignition system. The tilt/trim is wired on a completely separate circuit.
