Hard Hit - Cuts out on Accel/Load

Hi all,
We were out yesterday and I crossed the wake of a yacht incorrectly and came down too hard. (Glove box came down/off  )

After that the boat won't accelerate, she does the 'Wahhhhh' sound and dies out up past 1500RPMs. Then on the way back to the dock she started dying out under any acceleration or load. Was able to get back to dock at a tad above idle.
Carb is getting fuel.
Is it possible I came down hard enough to mess up the float in the carb?
Poor beast had been running great for the past month.

i myself think it is more likely to have Jared lose some crud some were in the fuel tank or float bowl or even the filter and now your fuel system is starving for enough fuel, but i was also thinking it could have Jared lose something electrical too hmmmm??

I changed out the in-line filter that is between the tank and the pump last night at the dock, thinking along the same lines of crud getting knocked loose.
Took it back out for a quickie and the same problem persisted.

Electrical seems fine, starts right back up after stalling out.

Guess I'll pop the top plate on the carb and see if there is any junk in there.

Thanks,

from prior experience...did a hard hit on an unmarked rock pile once, basically jumped it, had a little hull damage. Same symptoms your experiencing. After knocking myself out for a couple of days, changed the ign coil and all ran good again. Can't explain it, but it worked. If all else fails, try a known good one or drop the twenty five bucks if it's old. This was TBIV merc.

Found a 12v coil for an early 70's Ford at Advanced Auto, gonna have to give that a try.
Man whatever happened to the days of 'Parts' Catalogs?

Re: Hard Hit - Cuts out on Accel/Load

it's not uncommon to find loose ground wires, almost loose coil wires, slightly corroded plugs in wiring harnesses (and ignition module plugs). take a hard look at all the wiring back there, check to see that everything is snug and clean, pull connectors apart and check them, etc...

a while back, I came around a somewhat narrow section of river one afternoon and ramped a huge, wakeboard wake unexpectedly, tripped over the second and stuffed the bow hard at about 30 mph... boat ran like crap all the way back. took me two days to figure out that the plug into the ignition module had come partway loose...

if it is a thunderbolt iv ignition system i 2 would say check the ignition module. i replaced mine 2 months ago and went bad again. so i just did a complete conversion to a mallory electronic distributor now i just need to figure wiring for the shift interupt switch before i put it in the water. runs fantastic and shifts out of water with no load. just know the shift interupt has to be hooked up. gd luck.

Myself I would check out the crud/water that was hiding nicely in the corner of the carb until it got jolted out and is now in your acceleration pump.

But the wiring is a good bet too. A lot of the plugs work loose over time.

Re: Hard Hit - Cuts out on Accel/Load

All,
I grabbed some emery cloth, hit the grounds, the coil wires and a few other connectors.
Popped the top off the Carb and there was a small 1/4" droplet of water rolling around the float bowl.

Replaced the coil and va-voom - we were out for 8hrs yesterday and the boat ran great.
Has a little flat spot upon accel, but that existed before
the hit, come to think of it all my old autos had flat spots too... :D

Now to repair the seat that broke on Friday...

Thanks for all the help and advice - 'tis appreciated! ! !
