I just picked up a 1955 Evinrude 7.5 hp aquasonic at a yard sale. Did get it to fire, but wow, it's awful hard to pull. Is this the norm for this motor? Is this a high compression motor? I've pulled bigger hp motors that weren't near as hard. Anyone have a similar experience? Thanks.

Re: hard pull

I'm not sure about this mtr as I don't have a parts break down but there is a spring on the lower drive shaft that can break and expand and cause it to pull hard. I'm sure somebody else will chime in.

Re: hard pull

Well, yes the 1955 still has the old style recoil, which is harder to pull than the 1956-up models. But it shouldn't be unreasonable. There may be something wrong with the motor. A broken shock absorber in the lower unit immediately comes to mind. Or a dozen other things. Has anybody had it apart?

EDIT: boobie and I were thinking the same thing at the same time about the shock absorber

Re: hard pull

FR, when I had one of those break, I used to put them in a press and compress them and then weld them back together. Cheaper than a new one.

Re: hard pull

Don't have any history on this motor. I was thinking(usually gets me in trouble)that perhaps since the engine may not have been run in some time, that all it may need is a good squirt of oil in the cylinders. Think I'll try that tomorrow!

Re: hard pull

You'll want to change out the impeller anyway. Pull powerhead (required to drop lower unit for impeller change) and pull recoil. If it's nice and free, you have a broken shock absorber spring under waterpump. Easily replaceable or weld/fix as boobie states ^

Good luck!

OK! An impeller is on the parts list, among other things. This will be interesting! Thanks all!

Re: hard pull

Your lower unit could be out of oil & or rusty inside. Or it may have the wrong spark plugs in that have the "reach" (threaded part too long) & the pistons are hitting the plug.

Re: hard pull

Hmmmmm! That certainly could be a possibility! I will look into that also during the off season. Something will certainly have to be done. What I also should have pointed out was that besides being hard to pull, it pulls very erratic. My 20 hp merc pulls easier and smoothly.
