Hard reverse at controls............?

I have a 4 cyl. Volvo Penta (AQ171C) with a single prop 290 outdrive. It is really difficult to move the shifter handle into reverse. I really have to force it back. It does go in reverse, but getting it there is really tough, and it makes it really hard when trying to dock, etc. Before I go snooping, can anyone point me to a shortcut? Is there something about this outdrive, or the Volvo Penta controls that have proven to be an issue? Thanks for all replies!

I would check the posts, or a service manual on adjusting the shifting mech.

I had an '87 271c with a 290 duo prop, and I could pratically shift it with one finger.. really easy.

Sounds like you just need to adjust it.

Thanks Guys.....Yeah, No doubt it is probably the cable or the linkage, at least those are the two obvious things that come to mind. The point where the cable enters the outdrive doesn't look too easy to get to, so I was hoping it might be something a little easier...

Dave,

I've been working on a similar issue with my sterndrive. It's always good to isolate an issue. I did and determined it was my remote control/shifter/throttle lever (not sure what to call it). Anyway, I disconnected the two cables (throttle and shift) at the front from the throttle control and then at the back from the carb and shift plate. I was able to shift into forward/reverse/neutral by operating the shift plate manually. Also, the cables were easily operated. I found that the control level was hard to move. So, once isolated, I replaced the control lever.

Hope this helps.
Ed Freshwater

Re: Hard reverse at controls............?

Some great advice fellas, and I appreciate it. J.R. It's a 1988 Imperial VC230 WAC. It has 4cyl. Volvo Penta DOHC, single prop 290 outdrive. I love the boat....Just replaced the tilt/trim pump, rebuilt the carbs, and the reverse issue is the last (hopefully) thing on the list. Took it out today, and I think it ran as good as it ever has....Hope it stays that way! The only other thing I'd like to do is find a good, used SS prop for her.

Sounds like the reverse lock mechanism is binding. There is a rod that goes from the shifter lever on the back of the drive to the lock mech. The shaft going across the back of the boat(left to right)has a spring loaded bar that must push the lock part down easily. If not rev. is hard to get.Try some corrosion X or liquid wrench to free it up.Good luck

Re: Hard reverse at controls............?

Thanks again to all! Dunaruna - Pushing forward on the controls is nowhere near as hard as going back in reverse. (which would idicate that the cable is probably ok, would it not?)It really feels like it is binding up. Rickles may be on to something, as well as all the advice given. I'd love to have it working as David 1995 stated that on his he could pull it back with one finger! Think I'm going to take a look at it today. I'll let you guys know what I find out
