hard shifting

I have a 1995 formula with a bravo 3 outdrive. When unit warms up it has problems shifting into forward but it is fine when shifting into reverse. At the end of the year it stripped the spline hub on the back of the engine. Do you have any ideas what to do?

Check the gear lube. Is it black and smell burned? Any shiny specs in the oil?<br />How about water in the gear lube? Is the gear lube milky?
