hard start

I have an 87 3.0 merc, it starts right up out of the water, but when Im on the lake and say we stop for a few minutes , when I try to restart it, its hard to start..Someone said thats the way it is with a carb..but my other boat had a carb and it didnt act like that..<br /><br />any suggestions??

oh , more info.. it seems to be a fuel type problem, I push the throttle button in and give it gas, it may start and die, and just keep doing that and it will start..

I agree with the person who said it's normal. Latent engine heat is boiling off some of the fuel in the carb and making it tough to start. No big deal. Giving it a little gas sounds like an easy work around. This is why some folks are really sold on fuel injection.

My carbed engine starts with a touch of the key when warm.You have a fuel leak down or a carb problem..Have you looked for gas seapage around the carb?

Weak spark could do it also. <br />When was the last time it had a full tuneup. Points, condenser, cap, rotor, spark plugs, dwell set, timing set, carb adjusted. You know the yearly spring maintenance items.
