I sometimes have difficulty starting my 2000 model 115 Johnson outboard. I hold in the choke for 6-7 seconds, then turn the key. This doesn't always seem to work after the boat has not been running for a week or more. What am I doing wrong?
Do I hold in the choke in the off or ignition position. Does it matter? Then when cranking the engine to I continue to hold in the choke? Help! Lenny

Re: Hard starting

Heres the way it works for me:
1) Pressure the system (pump the bulb)
2) Turn the key to the "On" position
3) Push the key in (do NOT engage starter) and hold it in for an 8 count
4)Turn the key to "Start" to engage starter

The motor should start almost instantly. You may have to "tap" the primer as it warms up. This works pretty well on most all 2 stroke carb'd motors with primers rather than chokes. On non-Quick Start motors you (naturally) have to advance the throttle manually.

Good luck!
