Hello guys.I have an older 1986 boat.My question is,I see on my teleflex steering unit has 4 bolts holding the rack to the steering unit, can i remove them so i can try to get some lube down in the cable without removing the whole steering box?
I noticed they were loose .so i thought HEY! the rack was just binding with the pinion,,,But no! the cable is tight with the arm off the outdrive as well. i'm hoping to get some good lube greese down in the cable, thanks Joe

Re: HARD TELEFLEX STEERING

You can try but I am thinking you should get a new cable. Mine was an 88 and tried what you did to save money. It didn't work due to wear in the cable sheath.

I have been told there is a nut with a grease fitting and a seal that wil allow you to grease the cable from the back end where it enters the til tube. Grease nut sounds like a good idea.

Re: HARD TELEFLEX STEERING

Had a similar problem JCH, and worked on it for weeks. Even hung the cable up and fixed a kinda funnel at the top end and poured thin oil down it for days. Failed.

I cut it open after buying a new one, to see what the reason was. Turned out to be wear and probably lack of lubrication early in its life. The inner steel cable had frayed somewhere inside, and it was binding.
