Guy at the marina has a 1998 200 HP Johnny with a blown powerhaed. He said he got an estimate of $5,800 to repair it (sounds a tad high to me). He said he saw in the St. Pete. paper a guy who would rebuild any 4 cylinder outboard for $1,395 and any 6 cylinder for $1,895. Does this sound possible to you, and would you trust the workmanship for a price this low?
Stalker

Re: Hard to believe

Hey, I had my 96 Evinrude Ocean Pro 225hp V6 rebuilt for $4200. Bought a Reman Powerhead for $2600 and the rest was for rebuilding the carbs and the guy's hourly rate for labor. The original quote was around $7000 ... I told the guy to take a leap! Anyway, You'll notice that there is a company at this web site that has discounted there reman powerheads, let me tell you that $2000 for a quality reman powerhead is a STEAL! If I had an extra 2k I would buy one and put it on the shelf.

Your total cost to swap powerheads and rebuild the carbs and some labor should put you in the $3500 out the door.

Good Luck!

Re: Hard to believe

it would depend on what exactly was wrong with the motor. if the motor needed a new crank shaft theres no way anyone could do it for $1400-$1900. and if anyone says they can rebuild any 4-6cyl outboard for $1400-$1900 you'd be wise to stay away for him, or pay later!

My brother & sister in law had a rebuilt powerhead put on their mid/late 80' Johnson 225hp. Cost them around 3k+/-.
