At least you guy's wives see stuff to warn you about. I could run into a battle ship and my wife would never see it.

... my Wife gets frustrated because i can't hear what she says unless she yells....

Once again, count your blessings.

Plus, in my experience the only thing my wife's going to say anyway is "WHY DO YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO GO SO FAST?".

Older mercs are loud. Does it at least have the sound barrier on the inside of the cowl? (metal wrap around the engine). If so, it is what it is and if you want it quieter it's likely gonna have to be upgraded..

how fast are you going in this no wake zone? If your still going faster than other boats at the "idle" posting perhaps it's set to high?

what kind of noise is it? something mechanical going bad?

My advice..

tell her to hush, no wake means no waking people up.

make sure the noise is normal mercury noise. The older ones are louder.

Are there any easy solutions other than Obama's teleprompter?

Buy a four-stroke motor ...

easier to get to, Obama uses his all the time..

Just tell her to sit back and enjoy the 2 stroke smoke. Seriously, ignoring all the other benefits of I/O's that we get with ours over our Outboard, 2stroke bowrider, the quietness at wot and every rpm level really with a well sound insulated I/O, and the lack of smoke are great. Boating is just more enjoyable at high speeds and low speeds. The decibels and the smoke are draining after a while. I like the noise and smoke with my snowmobiles but not my boats.

Oh well I dunno. My wife's dead (I didn't do it.) And I don't have a girlfriend at the moment. So's I reckon it really don't matter much.

On a brighter note my motor is downright deafening @ wot, a lil better at idle ... Not saying I'm a big fan of obscenely loud whatever, but I do grant special dispensation to loud boats.

Besides, who want's to hear things like: "Slow down!" or "Look out!" or "What are you doing you maniac!" anyway ...
