Re: Hard to start after carb rebuild

I bought the motor from a guy for 60 bucks. I asked him a bunch of questions but he didn't tell me it had been sunk, the evidence was obvious after I had pulled it apart. A 9.9 on a 12ft jon boat should fly with 2 gents in it, it should plane a 14, these motors are torque monsters for being so small. The spray kind of carb cleaner is garbage for soaking carbs. I still think the carb is dirty. I had a honda carb that I had to soak 3 times to get it right and that was in the harshest carb cleaner you can buy. If you have a small engine shop near you phone them and see if they have an ultra sonic cleaner they can clean your carb in, takes an hour. Nothing cleans better than those, that's why jewelry shops use them. I took mine in and had it cleaned, it was like brand new once I got it back. I do the same for tecumseh carbs off of snow blowers.

Tell me that wasn't a sunk motor.

bhughes,
I think maybe I am being a little picky. I just don't want to get let down on the lake, I need to get it out and see how it acts at wot.
Thanks

bktheking,
I assume the picture in your post is your 9.9. It was really corroded up! It's awesome that you were able to get it running so good.

I'm going to run the premix squirt bottle test and then if it doesn't pass, I'll look for someplace with one of those ultra sonic cleaners and be very careful about the float height. Do you think I can get away with leaving the core plugs in? I don't have any extra ones.
Hopefully I'll be able to get on a good plane after all this carb fun. :)
Thanks

It was until I put an 88 Powerhead on it. Don't remove the core plugs, you already did.

Just make sure you blow out the passages in the carb on the low speed circuit. There are 3 passages where fuel can go in that circuit. 1. out the needle opening. 2. little holes in throat of carb near throttle plate. 3. where it picks up the fuel from the carb bowl. If you blow air into the needle opening after the needle is removed, it MUST come out the other 2. I usually put my pinky over the holes in the carb throat while using the canned-air straw to blow through the needle opening to confirm the 3rd. Also confirm the main jet is clear. You shouldn't have to cheat w/the float level. Good luck!

Oh.. 2 full-sized folks w/trolling motor and battery and gear is quite a bit for a 9.9 to push even on a 12'.. You may not get over 12-15mph. A shorter (less pitch) prop may get you to proper max rpm's for best performance, and maximum speed.

Re: Hard to start after carb rebuild

Ok, I got it starting with three pulls with choke on when dead cold . I have to coax it to stay running until I take the choke off. It will start with 1/4 pull after that. It cools down quickly. What i mean is 3 to 5 minutes and it takes about 3 pulls to get it started .
As kbait suggested, I was thinking of getting a new prop with less pitch. It has a 9 X 10 on it now.(I think, or was it 9 1/2 X 10?) Johnson list several props for this motor.
there is
10x5
9-1/4x8
9x10
9-1/2x10

My uneducated guess would be 9-1/4x8. I think that would give me about 400 more Rpm. However I don't want to spend $100 on a new prop and not see any improvement. Any advise?
