I am puzzled by my uncles 96 mercruiser V8 5.7 --- on the water hose it will start fine. it starts fine and runs good. But after the motor warms up and we shut down. It is so hard to start. any thoughts?
Re: hard to start after running, mercruiser 5.7 v8
Vapor lock perhaps? Caused by heat in the engine compartment...

Vapor lock occurs when the vapor pressure of the fuel is higher than the surrounding environment...

The fuel sitting in the carb's float bowls and fuel lines on a hot engine can actually boil... Boiling gas won't move the floats in the carb..
Re: hard to start after running, mercruiser 5.7 v8
thanks for the response.

no, there is no liquid in the plugs. it has carbs. seems like it is flooded, keeps turning and turning. What else do you think it might be?

puzzled.
Re: hard to start after running, mercruiser 5.7 v8
remove the filter and manually choke the carb with your hands while starting. If this works, then it should be a vacum lock. mine does it too. Am getting ready to rebuild or replace the carb.
Re: hard to start after running, mercruiser 5.7 v8
Give this a try.when you are about to restart, take off air cleaner arrestor and take note of where the choke is.Move it the opposite way and see if it starts right up.My choke was working the opposite way and preventing an easy restart.Hope it is that simple for you. CC
Re: hard to start after running, mercruiser 5.7 v8
will try this in a day or two. I have spoken to a buddy and he said it might be that points and condensor. He said get rid of it and get a electric one and it will fire and start right away. is there any truth to this?
