I have a 1984 Merc 90hp 2 stroke outboard. Took it to shop said it had a coil out and bad ignition switchbox. Should work fine now. Sounds fine but still hard to start in the water and has no power. when cold max rpms are 3000 and when it warms up it went up to 4000 and thats under a load. Took it back to shop he checked the timing, compression check, electrical, ended up replacing spark plugs and kitted the fuel pump. Still no power and hard to start in the water. Well 800$ later boat still running like crap. Any suggestions? and what should that motor tach out at?

As you know you picked the wrong shop and they have messed the engine up and don't have a clue what the problem is. What was the original problem?

Re: Hard to start and loss of power

original problem was loss of power and misfiring. the 3rd spark plug had no fire. I checked it myself. As far as the ignition switchbox, fuel pump, I dont know. I do know this that pumping the primer bulb while running in the water doesnt help it. My thought is a plugged jet. This boat had sat for atleast a year before I got it. Right now I took the carbs off and replacing all the fuel hose and gonna kit the carbs. You know it actually ran pretty good if it was a 45hp but its a 90 and I know it can run better.

Reason I'm thinking its a jet is cause it acts like it want to go and then it will stumble especially when I give it full throttle. It kind of coughs and then it tries to go and then it coughs. I dont know you get it out of the water and run it with muffs on it runs great till you get in the water and put a load on it.

I agree with you that it does sound like a fuel problem, alot of time when a engine sits for a long time after you start using it the fresh fuel wii cause the varnish to lossen and clog things up
