Just purchased 93 procraft pro 180 dual with 93 mariner 150 2.5 mag3. First time out was with prior owner and all went well. Second time out was by myself pumped bulb till it was hard and pushed in key for about 5 seconds and tried to start. It took several tries and about 10 minutes. Boat ran great after that. It would crank on first turn of the key for the rest of the day. Today went and pumped bulb but it never got real hard but tried to crank it. Pushed key in and waited about 5 seconds and cranked it. It ran about 5 seconds then shut down. Couldn't get it to crank agian.

a low charged battery can turn it over but not
enough to start it sometimes.... I would start
there. jump it from your car & see if it starts
right up. a new primer bulb too perhaps.
good luck,
M.Y.

Replace Bulb and fuel line! Also check Vent to be sure there is no restriction.

Pushing the key in chokes it right? Pushing it in while not trying to crank the engine doesn't do anything at all no matter how long you hold it in. If you want to choke the engine to crank it, push the key in then turn it to crank it in order to choke it. It'll probably crank alot easier.

Thanks efhenry for the heads up on the choke. I thought it choked prior to hitting the starter because I could hear the click in the motor. Can you tell I am new at this.

Kmartin,

I just experienced the same hard starting situation with my 1984 merc 115. It had started before very easy and I just had a new battery installed. Had me confused to say the least. Went home put it on the charger and after a full charge it started right up. As mellow Yellow explained, it cranked, what I thought was strong, prior to the charge, but I guess it wasn't strong enough. The full charge solved my problem, for now anyway.

Good Luck,
TRP251

If prime bulb won't get firm when you last started sounds to me like float valve in carb sticking open which would cause flooding condition
