Trog,

On the Volvo Penta 4.3GL the power for the choke comes straight off a terminal on the alternater which is why the engine needs to be running. You could of course just run a 12v source straight to it but running the engine is an easy way (Well if you can start it that is)

he he.. yes chris.. it seems volvo might have made the system a little cleverer if the thing that pulls the choke off actually knows the engine is running.. my mercruiser one dosnt.. the electric bit just gets a full battery voltage fed to it as soon as the ignition is turned on..

which is handy in my case cos i use the 12 volt choke feed to power my electronic ignition.. he he

trog100

Re: Hard To Start When Cold

Thanks Chris for the detailed diagnostic procedure. Hopefully todays rain will melt the last of the snow and I'll be able to get access to the boat soon. I'll run the tests and post back to let all know the final results.

Thanks again to all for all the help

Hello!

same problem here, but I have a 1986 Merc 230hp.

It used to flood out only when cold, but this season it's doing it warm as well. Engine only has 83 hours on it.

Does the above diagnostic procedure apply here as well??

Re: Hard To Start When Cold

As Chris suggested with the flame arrestor removed I watched the choke plate and and observed it slowly open over a few minutes.

It never stalled although I did adjust the throttle several times when it sounded a little rought (gave it more throttle then throttled back to around 1000 rpms).

I did one more check on the muffs with everything closed up. Again it started fine and with some throttle ajustments warmed up and ran for 15 or 20 minutes.

I had one successful outing on the lake, but put in gear pretty much right after starting. It was crowded at the launch area and I needed to clear the area for others.

I was hoping that monitoring the idle rpm more closely may have solved the stalling problem. Unfortunately the next time out it stalled right after starting and I could not restart at all. I assumed it flooded itself out so I pushed it on the trailer and took it home. I attempted to start again the next day with no luck. I'm going to start a new thread since this maybe related but is now a hard no start condition.
